Agree with Dunhamzzz here - Dell are very good. I've had my Inspiron 9300 for about 4 years now and it still plays things like CS:S like a dream on reasonable to good settings. Get's a bit hot on the old legs though!
Will be ordering a new one shortly.

it depends on entirely what you want it for , your gonna have to spend more than 500 on one if you intend to game on it
if its just for fruitchat and general web browsing , then you can pay as little as 175 for a crappy but functional linux based mini effort
if you want slightly better , currys do an advent ( choice of jazzy colours) with dual core , 1.6ghz 2gig ram , 120 gig hd ,dvd+rw , vista home premium , £ 329 ,,,,,,,,,
or like me , a ps3 , basic browser but you get the other benefits
and its only 300
a decent spec gaming laptop will start 800plus

I purchased an E-Systems laptop from Currys about 4 months ago now for £300. Its more or less the same spec as the Advent trayhop mentioned, and works fine for what I got it for (interweb and poker)......my only gripe is its so slow compared to my PC.
The PS3's a great option as mentioned, but am I correct in believing you can't view porn on it?
