Based on usual behaviour it would have offered you EXTRATERRESTRIAL and they you'd be left with just an S.

Now *that* would have been worth a video, unknownpseudonym! I was impressed enough with the 17 but for it to be the last 17 letters on the grid surely is unlikely ever to be repeated?

Also, unknown, obviously you got a clearance in the EXTRATER... game, so what was the score? It doesn't seem to have been over 1800 from what I can tell from the EWQ site...were all the other words just 3 and 4 letters to allow construction of the piece de resistance?

OK in the cold light of day it does seem likely that unkownpseudonym is pulling my leg...but after a long long week and a few glasses of wine, it's the kind of story that you hope is true. (I assume there was actually no clearance in the game?)

sorry. i know it is impolite to write weak jokes out of context; EXTRATERRESTRIALS was actually a herculean effort of bravery, wit and intelligence and i didn't finish the grid on that go.

in other news i found myself in the hinterland of neasden yesterday. if it sounds to you a little unglamorous you'd be spot on. it seems to be populated by illegal kosovans and cowboy builders. it does now have one redeeming feature though: SCHNOZZLE (333) at the outside inn; a tumbledown shack with 'spoons furniture. there was no branding though so it appears that even JDW has abandoned this wholly depressing place. it was also one of the first pubs i have ever been to which had not previously been befouled by HYENA's 1100s.

in other, other news i spotted a new machine (ind:e) in a pub near leicester square called the bear & staff so thought i'd step in for a pint and some wordupmanship. first game i got REACQUANTING and was excited to see that it only came second in the long words. who could possibly match my supremacy? well, it appears that DAVE JON have come out of retirement with another QUINTESSENTIAL (also the decidedly iffy plural EXPONENTIALS and various QUIZZ~ words). but they seem to only ever lay down scores in pubs i don't go to. bizarre. in my more regular haunts they are never to be seen on the scoreboards.
i will PM my minutiae to Ernest rather than tell a story about every word i have ever got. 10-44.

may i propose a little sub game?

first player/team to get a word starting with every letter of the alphabet which qualifies for Ernest's website.

so far i have ABCDEFHIJLMOPQRSTUVZ

so i need GKNWXY

X~ will obviously be tricky but i think N~ could pose a problem too.

anyone up for this? or shall i play with myself?

I would hazard a guess that you already do.

XYLOPHONE would be a good find.

In an otherwise frustrating WU sesh in the perma-deserted wasteland of Yates' in Glasgow I managed to record 3 consecutive clearances for the first time as a solo artist (2 1770s and a high 16) and also just the one entry for the website - a debut for SPASTICALLY (308/11).

As for unknown's challenge, I don't think I'll bother seeing as half my website entries begin with Q! But for N, 11+ letter words would be a good way in - NONSENSICALLY, NATIONALISM etc. are long but not all would be 300+.

Ernest and I had an afternoon session in Cambridge today, resulting in a 2211 top score and best word CONQUISTADOR.

The 2211 saw us capitalise on a there-from-the-very-beginning 'UIZZICALITY'!!

We also got 80,780 on 'Suit Pursuit' and I beat my best on Monkey Business (now 26,194)

The awesome MONKEYPUZZLES was not in the dictionary! :(
