Wordup clearance, by our very own UP

Post by Cardinal Sin »

UP asked me to post this video of him achieving a clearance on WU. I'm not sure why he asked me to do it, perhaps because of the crappy score that I wouldn't even grace with my name.

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/1GaOaLWezzs"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/1GaOaLWezzs" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

If you listen to the sound, you can hear UP saying "bugger" halfway through... also keep an eye out for the clenched fist of victory at the end after achieving a tricky clearance (and taking aeons to think about it).

thanks YE, in my defence i was sloshed and was going for the clearance from the start. and my phone was running out of juice and my dog ate my homework.
there is still no excuse for taking so long to find COR/BARBS or CRAB/BROS.

This is known as "filthing it". An amusing bit in the middle where you tried to take HORE and TROG...

thank you Ernest for pointing out some of my many shortcomings.
in normal circumstances i would have (of course) extended those to HOREHOUNDS and TROGLODYTIC

but i did do some hero worship by including BOBS.

How much do you typically get for a clearance... can't be £1 surely??

depends where you go; if it is a local then £1 is about your lot (maybe two or three times).
if you go to an undone pub you can get the JP of £10 with a decent clearance (say 1850 odd) then maybe £4 or £5 afters. there is also a 3rd division JP on the itbox version which only wants between 700-900 to cough out a tenner but this is rare.

That did look a lot different from the way I usually approach the grid UP - I'd definitely be aiming to engage some of the Qs, Xs etc in more substantial words near the start, though I guess the tradeoff is a decreased chance of reaching the nice shape/letters arrangement you had for the endgame. But surely that clearance was barely more than 1650 points from a good starting grid, with best word QUANTA or something? I suppose you did say you were sloshed...and you have recorded a 2090 in the past so I won't be judging you just by the video!

On this occasion UP was blatantly just hacking ASAP to try and ensure the clearance, so he wouldn't have to video again. However, having 8 letters at the end made it harder... 9 would have been better.

Either way I'm still impressed, especially if the Honourable Gentleman was pissed up, as I am yet to clear, although god only know why it's proving so difikult.

Perhaps it's my unerring (yet seemingly miniscule) vocabulary that's the issue.

Maybe there should be a competition to see who can video themselves getting the best points*pints product.
