I'm from a seaside resort - gambling since i was 13. Fucked up my A levels because i couldn't be arsed studying instead of gambling. Went through clearance and did a year at Leicester poly - in it's first year as the renamed De Montfort University.
Gambled the year away and dropped out - without any results as i owed the uni money (rent for the halls of residence)
Was sick back thne - loved machines didn't have a clue.
Went to work for an employment agency - still gambling - still losing. Finally began to understand - started making money in the big arcade on the front - Funland to those who know the area. Then along came £10 machines and some profit - lots of profit - days in arcades where a bad day was £300 plus. Never had it so good! So started going casino...........never had it so bad. Win £350 in 6 hours in an arcade - lose it in casino - time after time. And then the pubs got good - in fact they got very very good, if only my town didnt have a casino. Still i always kept enough money to live on and pay the rent - was working full time so always solvent and with a stake................until.........
Had a long term relationship...... it broke up just after they decided to introduce FOBT's in Bookies replacing all those lovely machines. Two months later owe £6k on a credit card. Sister bails me out. Pubs are great - profit every time - except i cant stop losing it elsewhere - it sick.
Three years ago start playing poker online.......Profit to date just over $55 000. I've got a reasonable enough job in retail management and i got married this year. I now play fruities for fun - and yes - i mostly make profit. Best thing about poker - i no longer play roulette or blackjack (FOBT's - yes but only the £70 games)
Best thing about poker - i have money! Going to Florida for two weeks next year - paid for out of my poker account.

Would i go back and change anything? Yes - i would never put a single coin in a machine ever. I can hand on heart say i have had made good money for the last ten years or so - but i fucked up my life. I would take it back in a shot..........If this meant i never started playing poker would i feel the same? Tough one to answer.....I like poker; i enjoy winning; and i am a tournament player - so a bad night only costs me £30-£50.

Gambling sucks; and as a way of life it is seriously anti-social. Additionally - and this is not said to offend anyone - but the majority of gamblers are selfish. Really really selfish - and i hate that! (I know that plenty of winning players are different - sorry)

This isn't a disaster story - my life is grounded - i got a job, and two of my pastimes - machines and poker - i make good money from. However i see how much of my life i have wasted; and how much money i have donated to Ladbrokes / Coral (Not Hills - they are my poker site) and Stanley casinos and i feel sick - and i hate it. My honest advice is - stay well away - it turns people into something they don't want to be.

JG wrote:Some great points mouse, but how did you win so much on Internet poker?it's blatently rigged after all. I'm £3,000 up or $5,000 but I barely play now. It was too rigged and was blocking the $10,000, so I gave up.
I don't believe its rigged. I only play $5 - $15 tournaments or rebuy tourneys. No turbos - they just luck. Decent discipline and a solid approach. Never had a losing month. Take the money straight out the account and do something sensible with it. Stupid thing is - if i had had anywhere near as much discipline down the years on fruits - and not giving it back to the casino etc, i'd be considerably better off.

It's weird but i just don't have the urge to gamble in other ways, i got into awps quite late so just saw the end of them in bookies, been in a bookies less than 10 times, casino's 0 times, got mates who do poker, online casino's, real casino's, fobt roulette and they reckon i'm daft for playing the machines in pubs!!
