he means you dont fix your own teeth, import your own veg and cant perscribe your own medication that you get for £7 even if its production cost is £10,000

you're never going to be completely self sufficient, although you skirt on the fringe of society tugging at the covers, you aren't a drain.

I agree with some of the points on here, but what about those earning from machines, still claiming benefits, whilst they are unavailable for work. There's probably a couple of hundred full time players, that admittedly don't pay income tax/national insurance, but this is a drop in the ocean compared to all the doleite losers that hang around pubs/arcades all day. Tax on petrol is horrendous to begin with.

I've always been led to believe that if you don't claim benefits/allowances but at the same time don't declare any earnings that they can question you as to how your living on nothing ?
Iv had a few letters saying I'm not paying national I, but apart from that what can they do. If they asked me I'd tell them.

look at how much more we spend towards our economy than average joe ,,,,,,,,,,,,, petrol for starters ,,,,,,, huge

Let's not even get started on that.
People claiming Job Seekers allowance but not actively seeking work :x

I should get straight that I'm not having a go at "pro players".
If that's how people want to spend their lives, that's up to them.
Seems pretty low aspiration to me, but the world's full of that.

I'm lucky in that I enjoy my job, enjoy the commute and enjoy the rewards.

When I played poker for a living it was as an escape from a job I hated, so I understand the desire to take yourself out of the rat race and look after yourself.

I just think people need to be realistic about what they bring to the table, which in the case of players, is not very much. (same with "pro" poker players that don't also work / run businesses incidentally)

You rely on health care, policing, Fire & Rescue, national defence, arts and sport, subsidised farming, schools for your kids.

You are not contributing to the payment of those things.

Council tax covers local ammenities.
Your private bills aren't relative.

Society is a huge complex machine and you take from it every minute of the day.
Pete you better stop mate.
Pee wee is digging his own grave here

[quote="&quot"]

i pay full council tax
i pay full prescription charges
i pay full dental work
i pay full water rates , gas , electric etc ,,,,,,,,,,,, nothing is subsidised

So does everyone else who brings in an income AND they pay income tax. Not sure what your intelligence level is but factors like paying water and gas, dental work has nothing to do with it. Of course you pay the water, gas and electric companies because they are just like any other business providing a service.

It is certain that there will always be some form of unemployment in life, so if your unlucky enougth not to be in work does that mean you are just left to be homeless and starve. So people abuse the system and some do not, but the attituide of saying 'why should I support people on benefits' is old hat and hints at a lack intelligence. If anyone on here found themselves out of work or struggling in some way, the first thing they would do is pay a visit to the benefits agency or releavant authorities just like anyone else would. Its a classic state of self interest, the attituide of I've got money, I don't want to pay any taxes but when Im struggling.....
Totally hypocritical view point and has the aroma of limited education and thought process.

It is the classic fruit machine player's attituide of relying on the state, not in the familiar way with benefits, but the arrogance of thinking they are beyond contributing like a normal citizen.

POKERPETE, I SALUTE YOU

The country would be a better place if no one gave, and no one took.

A basic amount would suffice for small things such as street lighting which would be compulsory. Then whatever you need, you pay for.

It's pretty much what happens in hong kong, when it was British ruled. It led to a society where everyone wanted to better themselves. Few people sat on their arses doing nothing. People need to be accountable for their actions, ie if they don't work hard at school they are likely to be poor, etc. If this attitude happened more in society there wouldn't be such a blame culture amongst people, people need to realise that their actions have consequences.
Bored of the grind.

So when your house is on fire, who you going to call if noone pays tax and there's no Fire service?
If you have kids, will you be home schooling them because there's no schools?
When you get your head smashed in for doing a machine in someone elses patch, you won't have a police force to arrest the bad guy?
You're not really thinking it through.

There are very few species on the planet that survive without extensive collaboration. Our ancestors, and our primate cousins are particularly social animals. Taxing and redistributing is basically in our DNA.

Fortunately for you, the system is set up to provide you all the advantages of pooled resources, even though you choose not to contribute.

I believe in a welfare state, but I would still like to see great sanctions on those intentionally not pulling their weight with no good reason.
