5 years time

Post by redlinesman »

What does everyone think the state of play will be in 5 years time. Will we all be out of a job or will business still be thriving. There has been plenty of doom and gloom predictions over the last decade but none of these ever came close to materialising.

Now we have the industry in meltdown with companies trapped into rolling out the DOND format. Is that time that we've always predicted just around the corner or will 'something new come out'

Think you've got a bit confused with my point there kid. Not sure where vegas has come from but Im talking about us players making a living rather than anything else. As far as your oponion about 'there will always be some form of AWP' Im afraid your completely wrong. The industry would love to get rid of this band of gaming and it's restrictions. It is only a matter of time until they get their wishes. Im not saying it will happen tomorrow or even next year but we alll know it has got to happen. It will not remain in a time warp. With the industry having been in meltdown for several years maybe the government will take action soon and Im not taking about simply increasing the jackpot from 70 to 100.

Do you think somewhere on the net theres a yank forum with some guy asking if vegas will ever close? I doubt it very much, to much money in this game. How much does one unit cost to produce? Pennies compared to what it can take over its lifetime
the difference is you can't make money from the slots in vegas - well you can but only if you get lucky. If I was a programmer I would make games completely random with no skill element. And with SWPs disappearing, probably to be turned into digital AWPs, that's undoubtedly the long term plan.

if you look at the facts you will see what should be happening next.

machines are now programmed with more auto-fault-finding...
machines are also starting to be more "computer" based, ie windows operating system
connectivity of computers on mass networks is more common
they still make a massive amount of money
the companies havent given up (recent addition of note-payout indicates they are still funding development)

my prediction is that they will link up machines to a control hub, and monitor the machines performance, they will leave a few skill elements in the games to keep you lot playing them, cause legitimate playing does increase revenue, but any exploitable programming will be picked up on at the close of buisness on the first day it is worked out. (a simple message from each terminal to a main computer that tells it money in and money out for the day maybe) once a games performance is affected, it will probably be deleted in the night or any 'errors' corrected.

the more fully electronic units, the more chance of this happening, as once a companys stock is all electronic, this is a viable move. it wont cost them anything to action, as all they have to do is fit a sim-card and a couple of extra wires and they have a fully connected gprs modem inside each unit.

then im afraid its:

GAME OVER

Then again, arcades were full of video games once and also pinball tables. They've died a death. There are two hi techs in my local quicksilver, out of about 100 machines. The Silvers over the road has a few more.
Roulette free since December 2011.

Same here. I have 2 Silvers, formerly Shipleys. Back in 2002/3, it was a 50/50 split of hi-tech and lo-tech. The AWPs have now dwindled to 5 and 3 respectively. One did add a pool table recently though. Before that, it was Shipley's bingo room.

To be honest, you have to laugh at the industry for not having evolved in the last 5 years or so.

AWPs should have been networked together and on video screens for years by now. It's not like networking and servers are anything new! How the hell do cash machines work..If my phone can update it's software over the mobile networks why the hell can't they put an network card in an AWP and have it do the same thing over the net?

You can purchase computers with all the required hardware for about £150 now, stick on a big touch screen monitor or two for about £300 each. No bulbs, no decals nothing for the arcades to have to think about maintaining. Hell, have a custom linux build and it will be secure as well. It could just load a bloody flash game at start up ffs!

But no, manus are sticking to their 1980s manufacturing ways and make a machine that costs about £2000 to build and uses more power than the large hadron collider.

They've only just thought of %-checking software? It's 2010! The machine should be able to look for patterns of players playing by now FFS!

Nah, that can't happen, well I've seen small stake 'roulette style' game in pubs but fobt, the cash involved, how could that ever work in a public house ?? you're talking 1000's of pound changing hands.

Who knows. Roulette or fruit machines in LBO's would have been an unheard of thing 15 years ago. Bookies were shut by 5.00 pm in the winter as well.

Will they accept debit cards as well ?
