Do you ever feel guilty when you do a machine?

Post by sir ratholer »

I don't mean about making other people lose etc, no-one holds a gun to their head to make them play a machine and it's their own choice.

I know to some degree that's the same for a pub landlord, but in certain cases it is their livelihood (managed pubs notwithstanding). When I'm doing an empty on a free house pub then I do feel pretty bad for them. Obviously I still do it though.

It's definitely true that the nicer the pub is to me the less likely I am to do it repeatedly as I'll feel sorry for them. There's one pub near me with an empire in that they're so nice to me I can't bring myself to do it often, the owner has told me I'm welcome to private poker nights there, etc.

There was a connect 4 last year that I was doing near Haywards Heath. The landlord was such a good bloke, he shook my hand every time I walked in to do it, I used to play thick on the machine and he used to tell me the answers, it was mad. I couldn't bring myself to do it in the end.

If you don't want me to do your machine, be nice to me. Wierd, but true. If you're a twat to me, I'll do it non stop.

Anyone else?
Bored of the grind.

I feel like that too, got a couple of good hits i'm quite lenient with as i'm in that boat. The vast majority i couldn't give a fuck though.

Well, i work in a pub on and off as and when im needed so i can kinda see it from both sides of the 'bar' so to speak.

The guy who runs the place near me really doesnt care who wins and who doesnt, its of no concern to him as he knows that its gotta take money to pay money (a refreshing change) and its simple logic that people are going to win out of it, he has seen me key it numerous times and doesnt bat an eyelid, he even asked me to show him what it does, so i did.

He fully understands what a key does and that it doesnt make it pay out or anything (again, a nice change) and its not an issue at all, all he asks is that its kept sly so other punters in there dont see as it causes them to ask questions, then if he doesnt say anything to me if its mentioned to him by others then it looks like he's letting me get away with it etc, so its just easier to keep it discreet.

The only thing that has been an issue in the past is when people were coming in during the day, buying a drink, killing the machine stone dead and leaving again.

So when punter who lost in it last night after work coz it was on its arse thinks he'll try it again tonight as the pubs always dead in the day and it surely cant take much more to offer summat half decent, not knowing that someones been in while most of the regulars are at work and tried say a tenner in it and got a nice £50 COB or summat so poor fucker then loses another 40 or 50 before going to the bar and saying fuck this, whats going on here, that thing has robbed me 2 nights in a row, it wont do anything, whats going on.

But on the other hand, if you dont do it, then someone else will!

Not really. Machines take more than they pay out(in normal circumstances), and if a machine is ready to pay most of the time that you're in the pub, then it means that they're getting the custom they need to make back the money that you win.
That, or the landlord plays it. And no guilt should be warranted for that!

If I could empty something, I might take it for a jackpot, but make sure I buy drinks in a nice pub with its own machine.

I've never really felt guilt. I did offer a few quid in tip to the arcade attendant once. He said it was a sackable offence had he accepted it though.

No I never feel guilty when playing the machines and sometimes hit the jackpot or better still taking a crafty £20 or so for a couple of pounds.

The local pubs machine i play in on the broads has a lot of boaters who put a few quid in and thats their lot, genrally they dont play to win just a couple of goes with their pint.

Me and the bro in law then jump on and sometime take a few quid out and that sorts our pints out for the rest of the night.

The pub owner does not mind as we are personally friends.

Anway, why should anyone feel guilty about taking a decent win from a machine, its what it is there for, fun and a good feeling when u win.

Does the licencee feel guilty when people lose money on these machine knowing some of aint got a clue what they are doing, nope, i doubt that they do.

If you were going in their pub, and losing £100+ on their machines every single day off the week, do you think they'd feel guilty?

thats a good point,

rips and emptiers's aside,
lets use a smash the cash as an example....

i go in the pub and its my 1st time in there,
i play the machine and put £50 in it and lose...
they have no problem atall.

i go in the pub and its my 1st time in there,
i play the machine and put £15 in for £105
they make snide comments and call you names behind your back and sometimes even bar you just for playing it :/

i went into a pub to play the alien and lost £35 in it then 2 days later i went in and got £70 off £4,
i went in on saturday afternoon and bought a drink and after 5min i made my way to the machine, i start to play it and i notice the manager has moved to the end of the bar...
i put £40 in it and win the £70 and as soon as it starts celebrating the win and flashing like a drunk slut the fat git comes over and says "take your winnings and leave because your defrauding the machine, thats twice your had a jackpot in the last week and your barred"

he saw that it cost me £40 and i stood far enough back so he could see everything i was doing (not keying or anything) but that wasnt good enough, i won so i was barred!

i even play the d-dond for a few boards 1st which returns a £10 loss but thats o.k :/

C-HUNT!

If a machine is there that you can empty you go do it. No regrets, no guilty feeling. If you dont then your either going to regret it yourself when it dissapears or someone else will be taking escially 'money out of your pocket'.

when i was playing more reguarly, if i was doing something that was an empty, i felt sorry for other people punting it,

basic tricks, like the vivid thing, mortal wombat.. other quick jp rips or large streaks from playing in a certain way, i didnt feel guilty at all, i had an edge..

empties that drasticly change the way the machine works and plays made me feel a bit guilty, ie a "just the ticket" played to its full potential hardly boarded again till they changed the motherboard, whereas a snake rattle and roll would recover within a few days.....
