Magners Rant

Post by Mattb »

Is everyone else like me in getting annoyed that everyone has suddenly started drinking Magners cider?

It's actually just Bulmers cider in Ireland, and the company had been recently struggling. A buyout, rebrand and ad campaign in the UK and boom - It's everywhere.

I think people are only drinking it for the sake of it. Add on the stupid price for it (only place i've found under £3 in Cambridge is Wetherspoons) and i can't understand it. It was comparitively priced until recently, where they've taken adavntage of the mass buying and bumped prices up. People are paying £3+ for a pint of cider just because its the new in drink! :x Beggars belief really!

I like it, but I'll only buy it from an offy / shop and drink it at home really. It is too much to drink out.

I do like a nice cider now and then however... ;)

Never even tried it, just not a cider fan to be honest and a fancy marketing campaign isn't going to change that.

I agree completely with what you're saying, I'd bet that hardly any of the current crop of magners drinkers would have regularly ordered a strongbow or scrumpy jack prior to the recent surge in popularity for cider, it's all an image thing. Strikes me as being a bit of a rip off really.

Amen to that! :D

I've not tried it either. I would try it if i could find it at a resonable price, but there's no way i'm paying £3+ for a pint. I think people think that nice bottle + fashionable drink = good. I've seen it costs nearly £5 in London bars too. No-one would happily pay £3+ for a pint in a pub, but if its Magners, that's ok. Madness.

The reason there is such a boom for this drink is beacuse it comes with something, Magners with a glass of ice, Corona with a lime. Ive been trying to think of a drink to go with something but just cant :D

KoppelBerg pear cider is quite possibly the best drink on the planet!! I discovered it about a month ago yet they only seem to sell it in spoons. If anyone knows where i can go and buy a crate or two please let me know. In the meantime Ill be frequenting my local wetherspoons.

this Corona with lime business really gets on my nerves. The lime was actualy used as a plug to stop flies getting into drinks in mexico (either a wedge down the neck or a slice over the top of the bottle)

but for some god-damned reason people now think that Corona or any other south american beer must be consumed with lime, when i throw it away i get odd looks from the bar staff like i've just committed a cardinal sin, uneducated morons!!

Magners gets on my tits aswell,my best mate drinks it all the time but its bland and boring and people only drink it because its percieved as a trendy drink. If it was tramps piss bottled and they put enough money behind it my mate would be supping it and grinning through gritted teeth swaering blind he likes it because of the taste.

I have been drinking cider, Bulmers in particular for about 10 years.

Koppelberg is really nice. The best cider I've had is Old Rosie, which some pubs in Oxford used to sell. It's about 10% and tastes like good squash - very dangerous!
