The rule isn't arbitrary - it's merely common courtesy and common sense: you should give ppl due notice before challenging them.
If not, the challenger would, unfairly, have had time to prepare themselves for a match that the challengee would not have been anticipating. I was only 'making it easier for myself' by refusing to give the challenger this advantage.
I don't know of any game or sport in which a title belt can be contended immediately, without due notice - if you do, then feel free to enlighten me.
As for you Ernest, I hope that you will be required to give your PhD viva three months early, at 4 in the morning, having been woken up by a team of examiners unexpectedly hammering at your door.
