Paying a routine visit to the WU High Scores website today I was left agog and dumbfounded by the galaxy of stars up on the screen indicating new entries. Obviously big congratulations to everyone involved in the VBOB world record team, but also to both VBOB and DAVE JON for the sublime quality and novelty of many of the new words on the boards.

It did leave one question though - on the itBox there are 10 entries on the leaderboard for each category. Yet the website must have getting on for 20 new high total scores from the Court - how did you find all these out?

My first thought was that VBOB and DAVE JON must have had the mother of all head-to-head contests and the 1800s which wouldn't have made the top 10 on the machine were just remembered by Ernest or something. But this appears not to have been the case...anyone got the answer?

The news from the ANGIE camp (ANDY and I are, temporarily at least, solo artists) is that I've been doing a fair bit of travelling so have only managed short sessions in each of Glasgow, the Wirral and Manchester.

In Glasgow I managed a mid-1800, but in Manchester I was on 1420 with MAPV left, which sadly didn't shuffle to give VAMP, thus a 1964. I'll still be looking for a new teammate at home but I'm pleasantly surprised to see I can get in the mid 1900s solo (a mere 350 from the World Record!)

Firstly there are two machines at the Court. I kept a list of all scores made that qualified for the national boards, independently of whether they qualified on the actual machines scoreboards. Certainly some of the lower words and scores didn't make the scoreboard on the machine.
I've always done this, otherwise for consistency you'd have to delete scores that got pushed off the bottom of the machine, and also when a machine was reset (The Court had been a while ago).

Also as DJ don't send us any scores, the national boards can only ever claim to be accurate down to the highest 10th best score/word they've got on all machines we've seen (even then, machines can be reset).

Why do I have to repeat that the challenge has to be issued at least a day before, you numbskull!

I shouldn't be surprised that you still haven't digested the procedure, finding that you hadn't even heard of the word 'discombobulated' before Sunday, let alone knew what it means.

That's surprising! Even me and my comparatively pea sized WU brain knew that one!

I'm quite tempted to come along to one of these WU spectacles and watch one day. Seeing as i'm in local territory it shouldn't be too much of an ask. I bet you chaps love playing any SWP game in the Regal - I often make a few quid in there fairly easily. They get played to death by muppets nearly every day!

I thought it was one of those nonsense words that Blackadder used to piss off Dr. Samuel Johnson in that episode with the dictionary, but it turns out that was PERICOMBOBULATION.

You can't just make arbitrary rules up to make it easier for yourself.

The rule isn't arbitrary - it's merely common courtesy and common sense: you should give ppl due notice before challenging them.

If not, the challenger would, unfairly, have had time to prepare themselves for a match that the challengee would not have been anticipating. I was only 'making it easier for myself' by refusing to give the challenger this advantage.

I don't know of any game or sport in which a title belt can be contended immediately, without due notice - if you do, then feel free to enlighten me.

As for you Ernest, I hope that you will be required to give your PhD viva three months early, at 4 in the morning, having been woken up by a team of examiners unexpectedly hammering at your door.

Nonsense. As the title-holder you should expect to be challenged, and furthermore you knew you were meeting Craig that day and that he would probably challenge you, so you should have been ready. It's not as if you need any equipment, or months of physical training.

It's a bit of a contentious issue asking for prep time - what exactly can you prepare for in WU? It's the computer who decides the boards! Or is it so you can stockpile brainfoods like pasta and fish to give you the mental edge
