Used cars a real minefield, only just got this new one and it's already showing signs of a knackered gear box... just my luck with cars....Been-Grant-Mitchell'd! wrote:My advice would be to steer clear of Vauxhalls - especially the Vectra.
I've had two Cavaliers (1.8i & a 2.5 V6), one Astra 1.4 (totally crap) & two Vectras (2.5 V6 & a 1.8 revised edition)
The V6 Cavalier was just fantastic & very underrated, but the Vectra 1.8 was a nightmare from the start. Two clutches, two gearboxes, numerous shock replacements & a knackered pot.
It was also extremely inefficient fuel wise, and flimsily built.
I've got a Passat now and it's been quite good apart from a new gearbox, clutch, suspension arm(s), brake pipes . . . .
Knowing you sir. ratholer, you've probably never had any problems at all, with your luck!

Lol thats actually not true, had a intermittent fault on my old golf mk3 years ago which stopped me emptying kebabs (why oh why didnt the thought of hiring a car not enter my mind?!) and needed a new head gasket on my old MGF, as well as some idiot squaddie driving into the side of my BMW and then fucking off to Iraq without giving me any money. And just needed a new clutch on my Celica.ob wrote:

About to get a new car myself, have been debating with either a Peugeot 307 Diesel like the one I bought my gf, its one of the cheapest cars to run especially with the new £35 tax for it, or pushing the boat out and get a Mercedes C Class Coupe. I'm leaning towards the more money Mercedes

Bored of the grind.

Just don't get a rover will you, unless you have proof that it has had the headgasket replaced with the aftermarket gaskit kit and head saver shim, as these are a fucker for HG failure, well, all sorts of failure really.
I was given a 1998 rover 200 off my mate from work for free because his parents bought him a 2001 focus as a 21st birsthday present and he didnt need the 200 anymore.
I owned it for 18 months, and it had.......
New windscreen, new bonnet, (long story short, drove home, checked oil, didnt shut bonnet properly, 70mph, BANG! bonnet met windscreen, it was upsetting) then a new catylitic convertor (for the MOT) 2nd hand set of wheels (others were buckled on the front) 4 new tyres, brand new brakes front and back which was, discs, pads, calipers, drums, shoes and cylinders, and new brake fluid, new exhaust system (competition system
) full service which consisted of plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, oil filter and castrol GTX magnatec oil.
Then she went bang, so, uprated head gasket kit, head skimmed (lots!) water pump and gasket, timing belt and tensioner set, new inlet manifold gasket, new radiator, and another oil and filter change, 3 weeks after i had done it already, then the new inlet gasket started fucking leaking coz it slipped out of place as i put the manifold back on but i didnt realise, so after 2 days i had a hydraulicly seized engine, number 4 cylinder full of water, bastard!
All ok for 8 months, nothing to report!
But then... I crashed it in the snow didnt i, slid into a taxi at about 5mph, rippling the passengers side wing nicely, so for a quick cheap job i filled it and resprayed it, metallic silver is a c*nt to spray in case you wondered by the way.
MOT time rolled around again, emissions failed, so fuel cleaner and a good thrashing, sorted!
And THEN!!! , the gearbox started whining, fucking bearings, so after about 3 months, and it got REALLY loud, a replacement gearbox was sourced and fitted, and this was the only job that i didnt do myself as i just dont have the kit or the space to swap a box over, as for one, my trolley jack wouldnt lift the car high enough to get the gearbox out in the first place, coz i tried. I also got a new clutch kit fitted while it was apart, as the old one didnt have long left, nearly down to the rivets.
And then, i drove it around for a few more months, then sold the fucker, £300 with 5 months MOT left on it and no tax!
And it cost me, over all that time, with all the new parts etc, about 2k, twothousandfuckingpounds!

SO now i have buddylove4000s old motor, a 1993 jap import eunos roadster, for £400, which had a new windscreen for the MOT, a couple of tyres plus a service, and not one problem in the 3 months i have had it, touch wood!

3 series BMW's are excellent ive had 7! dont think ive spent much over £200 on any of them! the E36 shape is looking a bit dated now but still nice to look at in a coupe/convertible, you can pick up a cheap E46 saloon 316i/318i for around £1200 or a much more smart sporty looking coupe for around £2500 not too bad on petrol, my E46 330d was doing around 38+mpg not amazing but still not bad. If well looked after they should hold the value no problem.
My Brothers got a Kia Picanto
god knows what made him buy it! Its scary to drive as the tyres dont look much fatter than them on a push bike, no weight in it at all could probably push it over just by leaning on it and the thing would just fold if anything were to whack into it.

how about a greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray.

feel sorry reading that clarky m8 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the sad irony is , for 2 grand you could have bought something else , half decent .
but looking at it another way ,,,,,,,,,, if you hadn't have done most the work yourself , how much would it have cost you???
1 question though lol ,,,,,,,,,,,, how the fuck did you find the time for the jobs ????
lately i haven't got time to wipe my arse ,,,,,,,,,,, i take about 1 day off a week (today)(and ill prob be on a night run tonight) ,,,,,,,,,,,,, mr no social life lol , but what do you do?? the moneys to good at the moment to ignore .
as for cars,,,,,,,,,,,, i have an 08plate peugeot 107 ,,,,,,,,,,, its only a 1litre , and you can overtake me like im a milkfloat lol,,,,,,,,,,,, but for slotting the economy cant be ignored .
this friday london meet ,,,,,,,,, leicester to london and back ,,,,,, 200 miles ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if i was to keep it at 50-60mph ,,,,,,,,, could do it for about 12quid ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but as im not quite the pensioner yet ,,,,,,,,driving realistically it will cost 20 ,,,,,, still good.

Back in the day I had the joy of teaching my girlfriend to drive in a Rover 214 (I think) with head gasket failure. Not fun in winter when no hot air and yet the temperature guage is at sixty squillion degrees celcius and she's not that good at hill starts.
Now she's got problems with her 106. You know when your central heating switches on and you get a swooshing of water, she has got that sound, particularly on cornering, doesn't sound good, just started recently, any clues?
