i do alot of dj-ing in the local boozers around my area.in at least 3 of the pubs i work my gear is set up right next to a bandit.

this works in two ways.i can either play my chooons and watch what goes in and what gets taken out,or i can put on a continous cd and play the fruity.

the point of this question is what would you do ?

if i watch the guys play it and win,i get really fucked off,but thats life.if i play and hog the bastard all night,the money i earn dj-ing goes down the back of the machine,so unless i win,im doing a disco for fuck all or it can be a very good little earner.

2 things:

1. Does the landlord who's paying you to spin-the-vinyl think he's getting value for his money if the DJ sticks one continuous CD on and does nothing else but play the fruity?

2. If you're at work, and you play with the very wages you're there to earn and end up down, you aren't gonna be a happy fella.

Because of those two issues I think you're best off watching the machine and trying only a couple of quid if you reckon it's buzzed. If not, I'd leave well alone, and then everyone'll be happy.

i think im going to keep off and just keep an eye out for whats going on.i'll try and steal a bit of cash when i can.i'll stick to mixing for now.

Watch the machines while your dj-ing, and determine if they are ready to be played or not. If they are, play them when you have finished and are technically no longer working.

I have to say i would feel shortchanged if i payed for a DJ and he just put a cd on while playing machines! If you really want to play them then keep an eye out for what people have won/lost and try your luck at the end of the night.

If you were a DJ, you'd play Records not CD's where you Automix and look like a fag..

Been MCing/Rapping/DJing/Producing since i was 16, im now 22 - done so many clubs, Radio stations everything and people loved the vibe we used to bring to places playing oldskool dance and garage to shite clubs and pubs.

It annoys me when i go to a club and theres some shit "MC" or "DJ" sticking a cd on and auto mixing

i think it depends on the sort of music..

if its rock or rnb type then mp3 is fine..

but if its dance and garage sort of thing you should be mixing yourself if you want to get respect..

Yeah but lots of decent djs use cd mixers. My mate uses a denon S50 or something and its awesome for mnixing.

Anyone can beat-match these days mate, I've been mixing hardcore / Jungle / D&B since about '93, but compared to some of my mates that can crab, beat juggle, battle mix etc, what I can do looks tame in comparison. Those techniques take years & years to perfect.

I'm not even going to comment on the 'CD mixer' debate.....suffice to say that if you've got time to watch the fruit machine, you shouldn't be getting paid to 'DJ' at all.

I used to live next to Tony de Vit and Fergie.... now those guys can (could) mix. When Tony De Vit was teaching fergie he used to listen to him but if he saw him touch the plate (speed itup or slow it does) he'd make him start again... he only ever used the pitch control.

I've also played in a few clubs in Brum funky house and sundissential type stuff and beat matching is the first lesson you learn and the most important. then its about expressing yourself and reading the crowd. Fatboy slim is a shocking dj technically but he's known as one of the best.

my old mate used to be G-Whiz in the times of happy hardcore, vibalite, helterskelter n all and back then you didnt even have to beat match very well... everything was in 4 bars so you'd just bang the fader over.

Crab if i remember rightly is a method of manipulating the cross and channel faders fro scratching? named after the shape of your hand?

CD mixing is a wierd affair, spesh if the system you are using doesnt have plates. Automix is work of the devil, for lazy unskilled DJ wannabes, put the radio on, mayaswell
