recent film reviews ,,,,,,,, worth renting ????

Post by trayhop123 »

although i have a virgin box with most of the sky movie channels , some nights its full of repeats ,,,, and generally fuck all on , and as i live opposite a blockbuster i rent alot of films also ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, which ironically makes me a twat , because by the time sky shows em , ive already seen em , ,,,,,,, hmmmm vicious circle :P

anyhow here's a few top titles imho , i wont give out too many plot details .

eden lake , top film ,,,,,, and so realistic , not far fetched attall,,,,,, obviously shot on a low budget with no actors of any note , but this somehow adds to the gritty realism . well worth a rent .

body of lies , brilliant terrorist film , staring russell crowe ad leo decaprio,,,, now this is big budget hollywood at its best , lots of real world locations , top supporting cast , believable story , top camera work , moody soundtrack , the works , ,,,,, if you have a decent set up ,(full hd tv , blu ray player , surround sound etc) you'll be blown away by the visuals sound etc .

the changeling ,,,,,, bit of a chick flick weepie , staring angelina jolie , but not only is it a brilliantly told true story , but also finally angelina shows she can actually act in a serious role , whereas normally relying on her pouting lips and admittedly good looks. theres none of that here , its set in 1920's america , and its brilliantly filmed to look like that era.. watch it , and be amazed that a story as shocking as this actually happened .

traitor , staring don cheedle of hotel rwanda fame , is another terrorist film , superbly filmed and acted ,,,,, honestly its difficult to chose between body of lies and this , so rent both.

quantum of solace , tough one to rate this , first of all you either like bond films or you dont , the underlying problem with this one though even though good , is that it feels like a bolt on extra , let me explain , its the shortest of all bond films at roughly 90mins or so, and is a continuation of casino royal , starting exactly where casino finished , so unless you have seen casino , it wont make much sense ,,,,,,, its basically one story ,,,,,, in two parts , and with a little editing of casinos overlong poker scenes , could of and should of been one complete film , still good big budget thrills ,,,,,, but you have to set aside 4hours and watch both together in one sitting .

rise of the foot soldier ,,,,,, a few months old this one and very very very squeamish , brutal to the extreme , but essential viewing , if you can stomach it. great film.

hellboy 2 ,,,,, not great , weak sequel to the fantastic original but ,,,,,,, if you have the set up , this will show you why you invested in blu ray and surround sound , awsome sound and visuals ,,,,, poor film story etc , so dont bother if your gonna watch it on bog standard dvd on your sister's 14inch portable .

tropic thunder , not fantastic , but simply essential viewing for the scenes with tom cruise , (no offence but uncanny mark pyne resemblance )

ones to avoid ,,,,, the mummy 3 , truly awful patronising kids crap , not a patch on the original . and as for journey to the centre of the earth ,,,,,,,,,, ffs somebody just take brendon frasier out and shoot him please ,,,,,,, and save a bullet for jason strathem , because death race is by far the worst film of the year.

sorry for the long opinionated post , but i was bored ,,,, ill fetch me cloak ,,,,,, lee

Yeah agreed, absolutely immense film, read the book before I saw the film too - called Muscle by Carlton Leach.

Anyone got any other good gangster films worth watching??
Bored of the grind.

This is the reason I fucked Sky Movies off along time ago - too many repeats and when they do premiere I already own the film.

You are spot on with Hellboy 2, its all style no substance and the original is one of, if not, the best comic book adaptation ever. Deffo in my top 10 fave movies list. Yep Rise of the Footsoldier is a good gritty movie, has anyone seen Cass? If so, is it worth the £8 HMV are selling it for?

As for QoS I'm glad you say watch Casino Royale before hand as I bought QoS on release day and am still yet to watch it! I've played QoS the game and apparantly that gives away a few spoilers, not to worry though.

I must admit I'd rather wait a couple of months and try and pick up my films cheap unless its something I've really been looking forward too. £5 for a rental is a waste of loolahs imo, I do believe Blockbusters are doing 3 for £10 at the moment which is a very good offer. Hell, theres a charity shop in my town which have been selling mint DVD's for a £1!! In the last couple of weeks the missus has picked up Man on Fire, Conan the Barbarion, Cobra, In Bruges, Red Sonja and Fargo.

Bargain, yaaaar!!

Sir R, Brit flick gangster wise, why not try Essex Boys, The Crew and Going off Big Time?

Plus you have your Guy Ritchie films, most of Ray Winstones stuff is good too.

the brit gangster films are good ,,,,,,,,, but cant compare with goodfellows , casino , once upon a time in america ( fantastic haunting soundtrack too) .

and of course the godfather triligy cant be touched by anything . say what you like about part 3 , obviously not as good as 1 or 2 but i stil liked it and thought it tied up the overall story nicely .

as for the guy ritchie efforts ,,,,,,, lock stock and snatch are perfect .

then he went all weird with revolver , which was total shit .

now rock n roller ,,,,,, which is simply good ,,,,,, but cant hold a candle to snatch/stock.

theres another ray winstone film called to love honour and obey ,,,,,, all the characters use the actors real first names ,,,,,,,, so jude law is jude ,,,,, ray winstone is ray etc top film and brutal in parts .
