If people think getting educated and providing a stable income for life is total codswallop then you're arguing against most of the nations understanding of getting on in life.
I'm no grey suited career officer, far from it in fact but represent the views of somebody that could have gone full time pro on the machines some 18 years or so ago, but made the decision to train for a career.
Don't take that choice as a 'he couldn't cut it on the machines' - I just saw that the golden egg/goose wasn't going to be here forever.
You only have to read posts from even just 5 years ago, never mind what could have been written in the early 90's to see the scene has lots less to offer, nobody can argue with that.
You have respected players on here already ringing the bells of doom and wondering what they will do next given they are older than our friend Gary. Retraining is codswallop ?? Pffft. I simply put across Gary had age on his side, then it's mentioned to get on fast track courses etc - -bit of a u turn in the same post don't you think ?
Whatever way you do it, do something now. There is no way this is going to last forever, 15 years ago the spoils were rich, today they are there with much more travelling as the ocean is now a lake. 15 years time ? I rather think there will be a lot of fish in a small stream.
I agree with what you are saying, but university degree is not the answer in my opinion.
The whole Uni thing is just an excuse to make friends and go out on the piss. Piece of paper at the end means nothing and wont be of any use whatsoever apart from on a CV.
What you should do, is to do a course in whatever it is you want to do and work from there.
For me, I started a Cisco Networking Course a couple of years ago when it was clear that the demise of machines was drawing ever closer. With this 'qualification', you can walk into a 30k job tommorow pretty much guaranteed. Obviously can get more with perks like the car, pension, laptop etc if you have other things behind you, but worst case, you'll be on 30k. Within a couple of years, you should definatly be on 50k if your working hard, if your not, move on and you soon will be.
Because of my background knowledge and personal recommendations I was able to walk in a lot higher than that before I even passed the course thank god otherwise I would have found motivation very difficult.
