Laptop problems

I have a toshiba laptop which has been cutting out on me for a while and has finally given up the ghost tonight. I have been reBooting up tillnow which has worked now it just lights up for ten secs and then power light goes out. It has been subjected to some abuse from my 2 year old so is this likely to be a costly repair. I don't think is battery as laptop has always has reasonable battery life. Thought I would ask on here as plenty of you guys know far more than I do about pcs!!! Cheers
