ISSUE 54 - WORD UP HAS GONE
'drippy couple' I didnt know the Brewises played word up but seeing as they went to Cambridge I believe the home of the word up god it makes sense. I dont believe word up ever topped the list of most played/profitable games , though how the industry works it out is beyond me. Millionare the original was tops for some years followed by bullseye and I cant remember if the bingo game took over or not (top 5 was listed at a gamesnet site in the last year or so)

Because I can clear really easily (and that's what I focus on doing) it's a profitable game for me. More than that I enjoy playing so I'm disappointed it's gone.sue denim wrote: with soup, good players can (and will even for the modest returns) ace it really easily. this makes it unplayable for the drippy couple and Signor Bob, nobody is a winner.
I'm just not sure your drippy couple could even tell the difference between Word Up & Soup. Most likely they don't know scrabble words either, although they'd get lucky by guessing.
It takes time to learn to clear and "mug punters" try it once, get pissed off and never play it again (that's whose money we're taking). I've seen it happen.
Hopefully Word Cube has replaced it?

well yes but the current STDD2 and HHH are not the original games. this was my point, WU stood the test of time without gimmickry/ raising (or in this case lowering) the bar.QuizMaster wrote:Word Up would have needed another 5 years at least before it caught Hangman and Spot the Difference, which were on the first itboxes/Gamesnets I ever saw.
as an aside i'd be interested to know what the original menu was.
nobody ever wins on those things.

no. Heaven forfend. the new word cube is toss: 3d boggle with no scope for any sort of elegance in play.Hopefully Word Cube has replaced it?
at least the old paragon cube gave out free £20 notes for your stabbing. the titbox WC smells a bit of poo.

Of course you're right. Hangman 3 is completely different to the original Hangman. It has a 3 after it for a start, and I think the vulture makes a slightly different sound.
'The clowns who play it for entertainment', by the way, are not you. Everytime I've watched Joe Public play it he has awarded himself a gold star for pearls of the language such as 'cat' 'mat' and 'sat'. The only time I've actually witnessed anybody putting a word of longer than 6 letters in was in a University bar whilst I was lurking. I kid you not, I watched this bloke spell out 'conflagration' (which I though was pretty good) and after he'd finished on the box (he won nothing), I asked him if the University had a chess club. 'Yes', he said, 'I'm the captain'.
These are the sort of people who will miss Word Up. Not Joe Public.
Original Menu on itbox/Gamesnet? Tough call so feel free to add any....I'm going for:
Hangman
Spot the Difference
Sun & Moon
Aladdin's Cave
Battleships
Top of the Pops
Copy Cat
John Barnes' Greatest Goals
Strike it Rich
Cluedo

You've a hell of a memory QM, or good record-keeping practices! Can't add anything to your list but enjoyed the nostalgia rush. I seem to recall there was a chap in Oxford at the time who could jackpot Sun & Moon at will. Was it c. 1998/99 ish? I find it very difficult to remember clearly, I must confess.

There were a couple of people who could take Sun & Moon apart, one of whom was the late (and great) Grimsby Mick.
I think it was around '99 but I could be wrong. I had forgotten about Treasure Quest being on Gamesnets. Now that was a good game in every sense.
