The man was a gaming god.
I read this in an F1 magazine on the train last weekend: A survey was recently conducted to discover which sports had the most spent on them worldwide through sponsorship. First was football (predictably), second was motor racing (considering the cost of F1, also not surprising), but what was the third?

Air race: Surprisingly no. I presume this is because the planes flown in that tend to be bought, rather than researched and built. And because there are very few different classes. Remember motorsport was second, and that has a large amount of classes. F1, GP2, F3, ChampCar, Rallying, Karting, etc.. They all add up.
EDIT: NM gets it, it's sailing. Those boats must cost a lot.
