Whats your best win on the footie?
Had many £k+ results on football, but had the flip side plenty of times too, only singles tho, doubles or higher are a mugs bet as people have said, as you are getting an expected return that is much lower than 100%
As to bookies vs betfair: the 5% (or slightly less if your a big player) commision is a killer on betfair, and on occasion the prices in bookies are actually slightly better or the same as betfair on one of the outcomes of a game... needless to say these represent wise bets to take on the bookies with (or arb's depending on the difference and your commision rate). TBH I only really use betfair for arbing purposes.
As to roulette harry, alot of us have gone down that route :P, haven't done huge amounts personally, and if I get the urge, I play the zero lounge games on betfair, which are 0% edge/commision so it's just a question of who gets lucky, me or them - although limits are rather restricting to be fair.

I took 9/1 on Sunderland winning the Championship last season when they were 7th in the league 
Wish I'd put more than a fiver on..
If betting on the Prem games, betfair is better than the bookies if you want to back the outsiders. Even with the commission you'll still get more for the outsider's win, and usually the draw as well. And quite often the odds-on win as well.
As for arbitrage betting..
There was a 96% book on the Arg-Brazil Copa America Final 2007.
Will Hill had Argentina at 1.57 and the others had Argentina at 1.43.
If you backed Argentina with Will Hill and Brazil with any of the others you were guaranteed a profit. It's rare to see a 96%er
