I think technically this wouldn't reduce Y but would reduce the average take. I do take your point though. That said, I've never seen any landlord taking this view, at least as far as I'm concerned, and that's included many fairly embarrassing situations over the years where I've walked into a working man's pub in a working man's area and taken £20+.leonardo1 wrote: That's true. But if cool turns up every 3 months, JPs everything then leaves, the local punters will be playing games with no payouts. They'll stop playing them completely, so the pub will be out of pocket. i.e. the publican still takes his X% but the Y might be much lower....
PUB BANNINGS NUMBER REASON PLACE LENGTH
I was thinking Y was a number rather than a percentage so yeah you're right.grecian wrote:

I generally play in Spoons, O'Neill, Yateses, Embers etc. The staff there don't care. Barrases and Fullers are a bit different cos they are often just local pubs which have franchised leaving the gaffers in place. Snooker clubs, dingy backstreet bars etc. you're just asking for trouble In my opinion. Anyway I can't go into a pub and not get a pint. It's not in my nature.

Most arrangements with pubs are on a 50% basis. The pubs get 50% for having the machine and doing nothing else. The suppliers have to bring in/take out / service/monitor / repair / collect from the machines for their 50%. I do not agree with the refunds policy operated by the major companies but talk to an engineer or even to the head office of these companies and you will get a reasonable conversation. They are not full of paranoia about somebody 'fiddling' their machines. After all they are their machines as you are reminded when trying to get a refund for a non-payout. 'Sorry mate its not our machine we rent em'. Ive even phoned a games manufacturer to slag off one of their games and had an interesting half hour conversation (sorry bfm you were mostly right!). Greed is a deadly sin , Im not being greedy just taking where possible what is offered to me. And as for not making a living my thoughts are we are only limited by self-imposed limits on our mind .Where theres a will theres a way. They are not lengths of ban just when started from.

I agree with grecian, as a player of fruit rather than quiz machines, I would argue that considering machines are based on a %age payout, even if I were to win £75 for £1 in, I haven't actually took any money from their earnings; the more money played through the machine, the more profits they get - regardless of who wins and who loses... ( given that there is the same amount of play after you left, compared to had you not played it at all - see below )
In terms of regulars not playing because of dead games - what you forget is that most regulars are stupid, and can't really tell the difference between an alive/dead machine, as they are simply trying to get shitty £2-4 wins, not trying to force the machine - so even if it were happy, they'd still take £2-4 ( despite it being ready to offer more ) so it would make little difference to them - machines are never killed so much that they are unwilling to give a few £2-4 wins, and as such landlords should realise we are actually doing them a favour, rather than taking their money if they were to consider the long run profits.

I'm with grecian on this (in fact I'm beginning to wonder if I have a doppelganger given how much we agree on thingsgrecian wrote:All that said, I admit to an amount of dubiety over Cool's claims. I've been playing machines for many years, to a reasonable standard although perhaps not to Cool's standards (tho' I've never seen him play to the best of my knowledge!) and I've never once been kicked out of a pub, and that includes some fairly grotty pubs I've had cause to enter for machine purposes. I always take care to buy a drink and be friendly and polite. On the contrary, in many pubs, I've been congratulated on beating the machine either by locals or bar staff or landlords.

How you behave, when you play and how you deal with landlords, managers and bar staff all have an effect on this, independent of the amounts you actually win. Given the history of the Bournemouth Litten Tree incident, and this recent post:
is it possible that cool reacts ever so slightly over the top when something goes against him? Just a thought...cool wrote:no its a small company based in Burnham Breeches nr Slough, cant remember its name as I threw their card away in anger!
The card was thrown away when I was at home not in the pub! Its an odd one this. The landlady said I would be refunded the money if I had won the money and the engineer agreed , so the alarm bells were ringing already.Show a 99 people a screen that says I owe you £15 and one publican and it will be only the publican that says well you might be owed £15 . A few weeks later I visited the pub and she had the cheek to say that the engineer hadn't even been out.On the same night I bumped into an old friend Wolfy of Wimbledon who had been ripped off by the same machine (they gave him the £3!).If Wolfy looked at Fruitchat he could have given me a character reference but I dont believe he does. Why if I am supposedly aggressive enlist the support of a number of publicans who were prepared to back me up if requested to by the media? Why I talk in disparaging terms about publicans its only about the rogue few that you get in any profession.
They do have justification, that's the point. It's their pub and they are legally entitled to not serve whoever they like.cool wrote:if somebody bans you from their establishment for life without any prior banter and without any justification I find it hard to believe that anybody would just walk and say fair enough youre the boss.

To be honest mate I find that's pretty much the best thing to do. They'll probably be expecting some kind of confrontation so this confuses them no end. Best to smile too if possible too. Why give them the satisfaction of feeling that missing out on visiting their establishment is of some great detriment to you (when, lets face it, it really shoudn't be anyway).cool wrote:if somebody bans you from their establishment for life without any prior banter and without any justification I find it hard to believe that anybody would just walk and say fair enough youre the boss.
I've only been banned from a handful of places in the last 10 years+ (although I play fruit machines primarily) and whilst I'll agree that in some circumstances there are genuine financial reasons for being kicked, in the majority of cases it really does just boil down to ignorance on the part of the landlord/lady. As has already been said, it's just a hazzard of the job really.
The thing with sorting out refunds for lost coins (putting your pound in to get no credits) or IOUs due to machine being empty, is that most of the landlords or bar managers will turn round and say "It's not our machine", but if you win 'too much' out of it (like getting a double repeating jackpot off a pound or something), it suddenly becomes their machine again. This applies for both quiz and fruit machines.
Though going back to bannings, as said before, you should always buy a pint, be polite and courteous, and there shouldn't be a problem. Don't just walk into the pub and go straight on the quiz/fruit machines without buying a drink.
