Cat D is Cat D, no license changes, just will change the Cat stake and prize values, up or down as deemed appropriate.

Pubs (public houses)

Your alcohol licence gives permission to operate two category C or category D gaming machines (fruit machines, slot machines). However to enable this permission you will need to notify your local authority that you intent to operate machines under your alcohol licence. A fee will be payable (please check your local authorities website for detail of the fee).

If a person ceases to be the holder of an on-premises alcohol licence, the permission to site the two gaming machines also ceases. Therefore, anybody applying for a new premises alcohol licence will need to notify the licensing authority of their intention to make gaming machines available for use, and pay the fee again. This renewal is only necessary where there is a change in the alcohol premises licence holder (not where there is simply a change in tenant or designated premises supervisor).

Premises alcohol licence holders wishing to run additional category C or category D gaming machines must also apply, in advance of the machines being made available for play, to their local licensing authority for a gaming permit. Fees will be payable (please check your local authorities website for detail of the fees).

Come February Cat D is going to have sort sort of tax to it.

They're scrapping the individual machine licenses and are taxing everything bar B3a

Machine Games Duty
Machine Games Duty (MGD) is a new tax on gaming machines that starts on 1st February 2013 and will replace both Amusement Machine Licence Duty (AMLD) and the payment of Output VAT on machines takings.
It will be payable on the net takings of any machine having the facility to pay out a cash prize greater than the cost to play. This will include gaming machines of all categories except B3A, and will also cover quiz machines that pay out a cash prize.
Category B3A is the only gaming machine that will be exempt from MGD. Pull tab vending machines are also unaffected and remain exempt from all taxes.

Also to note as of the 1st FEB you can site a CAT C where there was previously a CAT D without paying the fee, you just pay the tax... expect places that had done away with machines to start getting them in again... those that have the £5ers in will be able to swap straight away, they are a step ahead.

Defo sound like 2013 is going to be an interesting year for sure on the fruit side of things.

I'd imagine between February and April 99% of places that can site machines, will.

you would of thought so, no brainer to let a established operator come in, site machine and just take a cut of the profits.

Just think of it shit machines everywhere, I don't see it creating a gold mine, just the concentration of play more widespread, of course a good thing theres going to be more possibles.
