it's about calibrating the locals.
beefeater/harvester etc - can get away with a mineral water every time.
shithole boozers - bottle of becks/bud/holsten - gave up buying pints in really rough places as i notived one place didn't even bother washing the pint glasses.
like cannonvall says - a good breakfast is key. all too easy to either have a mcdonalds breakfast or skip breakfast completely. makes you feel sluggish and a decent breakfast costs little and will keep you going all day
