Anyone who jackpots Word up gets my respect.... Oh the wasted pound coins and time...

This originated as UK military slang. The first reference to it in print is in Fraser and Gibbons' Soldier & Sailor Words, 1925:WaterGate wrote:Eh?A sure sign when things start getting hard to raise from the cranium that your one over the eight. Know what I mean.
"One over the eight, one drink too many. Slightly intoxicated, the presumption being that an average 'moderate' man can safely drink eight glasses of beer."
After a gallon of beer 'slightly intoxicated' seems a bit of an understatement. Beer was weaker in the 1920s than it is now, but even so.
Oh, I'm so scared.

Well today I achieved a rare one for me. I have not played pub quiz for several years probably because I have always found it impossible on account of it being regularly plundered in my regular haunts by full time PQ professionals.
Had a 50p credit left today and thought well at least it will be quick and sailed through to the tenner with cheat and try again still intact. This was in no thicko arms but a pub regularly plagued by keen SWPists.
It was like it kicked in to a pre-determined easy mode like the weakest link used to do.
