Let me save you all some money and I'll tell you all the formula for working out the length of a random piece of string (s).
Let A = the start point of the piece of string (this can be either end)
Let B = the middle point of the piece of string. This can be determined by folding the string exactly in half.
Measure the length from A --> B, then multiply this value by 2.
So in short,
Len (S) = Len (A-->B) * 2

I have a much simpler way.
1) Use a tape measure.
2) See 1.

Of course, an even better idea would be to sell balls of string which already have its measurements marked out.
Anyone fancy going into business?

Certainly, I don't mind stringing along!
In pseudo-formulae: A piece of string is twice as long as half it's length...!

"And do you ever contradict yourself, Minister?" "Well, yes and no..."
