Started the day with 191k

Pretty card dead, except for the following;

won a decent hand when the SB limped with 5,5 and I checked J,8
Flop was 9,10,5 he made a small bet and I called.
turn was a 7, he bet I raised, he called.
river a Q, he bet I raised, he called.
up to 260k

early position player raised with 8,8 (he said after)
I reraised with A,A
he passed
still at about 250k (blinds and antes pretty steep)

Mid position pushes about 50k
I call from BB with A,A
he shows 3,3
another player says he passed 2,3 (hate it when people do that)
case 3 on the flop.
back just under 200k

I raise to 2600 in early position with 10,10
player immediately to my left shoves 80k
passes round to me and I pass.
He says "pick one"
I decline, telling him, that tells me all I need to know.
I think he would only say that with A,A, K,K, Q, Q or A,K so good pass.
Down to about 170k by now

Blinds and antes really cutting now.
made a few bets and had to pass to shoves.

Down under 100k mark and blinds really biting player to my left (Mr Pick One) makes it 4.5 BB UTG.
Passes round to me and I have AQ
pass or shove decision.
I decide to shove to get him off anything but the sort o range I had him on last time.
He snapped me off with 10,10.
never occured to him I might have him crushed.
no help from the board and I'm left with less that a SB, which I have to post.

8,2 v KK was the last cards I saw.

It's rare I come away from a tournament feeling I never made a single mis-step. Played some of the best poker of my life in fact.
we started with 15k and after 3 levels at the first break I had 31k.

Had A,A cracked twice.
Won a couple of big races, which you have to if you're going to win a tournament.
during card dead spells I struck a good balance between making moves and picking up chips with crap and patient folding of more crap.

Got good value from my big hands.
made a stand with A4 and got lucky against A7 to survive late on day 1.
beat an AQ with AJ.
Played a couple of hands where I set up elaborate river bluffs but ended up actually rivering big hands which was nice.

It's frustrating to keep making the low money in these multi-day tourneys but I know I'm going to convert one sooner or later.

The average standard of play in the £50-£100 tourneys is very poor and it's easy to spot the other sharks early and adjust my play to them. The rest of the field are easy pickings.

Got a DTD golf day on 16th September with a Buffet and presentation afterwards. Will probably play what ever tournament is on that night, but that'll just be a standard clock / stack game.

September's a busy month for me so doubt I'll get to the Super50 or Incredible100.

Will post a quick report if people are interested.

tricky as there are no "petes" in the list of winners on the site. :D

How much poker do you play pete? I play a fair bit on line with reasonable sucess - ROI 160% over the last four years - $42k overall profit, but don't play much live.

How does the standard compare to the $10 on line tourneys i frequent?

Good post - and ul final result. My only grouse with poker is the massively top heavy payouts.

I generally play at DTD twice a month.
Super 50s and Incredible 100s
I play the a few online multis too, but I prefer playing live to online.

My feeling is that the average £50 live players and £10 online MTT players are generally a similar standard. However, there's another tier of live player that makes fairly light work of picking off internet players with less live experience. For me, online and live poker require different skills. Some people can do both, but they have different styles for the two different arenas.

I came to terms a few years ago with the fact I was only slightly better than break even online, but that I have a decent edge over most players live.

I play online to pass the time between live tourneys, but I enjoy sitting across a real table from shakey, hooded, shaded, earphoned online players who are screaming free information with every bone in their body.

There's absolutely no substitute for experience.

As for top heavy payouts, DTD is pretty good, but more often than not, deals are made so the advertised prizes aren't what's actually paid out.
