debating whether to get one of these dont normally play games and that but im a bit bored lol

so what do you reckon?

Ive played games for years but not as much recently
My point is that the games these days are bloody hard !
I just wonder if a non gamer trying to start up may find them too hard and therefore give up easily ?

Not so worried about if there hard or not really.

Does anyone no if its possible to get copy's for ps3 games and that yet? i remember reading somewhere that its not possible??? and ps3 games arent too cheap i am told??

Im thinking of getting a ps3. I dont know a great deal about them, but you can get a 80gb one for £299. Im just trying to find out if it will play ps2 games like the 60gb one does. Anyone know?

Most modern consoles are backward compatible. PS3 offers enhanced graphics on some PS2 games.

Both PS3 and Xbox are backwardly compatable with SOME of the previous system's games. Originally the PS3 did this in hardware (they basically had the main "Emotion Engine" chip from a PS2 in them) but due to manufactuing costs both systems now do it in software, periodically updated through their online services to support more games. The official sites both maintain lists of currently compatable games.

A year ago I'd've unheasitatingly said the 360. These days it's less clear cut, as developers are finally starting to get to grips with the PS3 hardware (which is more of a mess internally than the 360). There's some totally gorgeous looking games coming up exclusively for the PS3.

Eurogamer periodically does some good comparison articles (14 so far), here's the latest one, which contains links to all the others.

Also consider the two system's online networks, and what stuff you can get through them. For my money, Xbox Live Arcade is far better at the moment.

The 360 is by far the cheapest of the two (in fact, due to the latest price cut, the base system is now cheaper than a Wii), but I've never really considered that, because you only buy a console every four or five years anyway, so what difference will a couple of hundred quid make over that time?

Basically, think what games you want to play, and get the system they play best on (for multi-platform games) or the only system they're on (if they're exclusives). That really is all that matters. And don't forget the PS3 can play Blu-Ray.

Or, you could be sad like me, and get both.

EDIT: Are you sure about the whole "Games these days are much harder" thing BTW Petera? Do you remember the 8-bit era? Pixel-perfect jumping? Wide collision boxes? For me, games these days are much easier. FF6 compared to FF12 is no comparison, effort-wise.

There's valid arguments for both systems. The 360 is by far the less expensive option, but I'd opt for the 120gb Elite which is the best version, more space especially when you consider Microsoft are upgrading the system so that you can burn the majority of the disc info onto your hard drive (as does the PS3 as standard), cutting down on load times and making the system much quieter as the game runs off the 360 rather than the disc. (You do have to have the disc in your 360 at the same time, anti-piracy measure I'd assume.)

XBLA is much better than PSN, but thats common knowledge. People may complain about Xbox Live not being free, but it works out at 11p a day! Believe me if it was free, it would be awful - M/s wouldn't give a damn about it.

In my opinion the 360 has by far the better game catalogue. The 360 had a head start and has been churning out quality games since day one and will continue to do so. Even the games which came out on both consoles were better on the 360 in the early days, but now they're very much on par and some of the forthcming releases, gulp, even look better on the PS3.

The only real negative regarding the 360 is the reliability issue.

Features exclusive to the PS3 are obviously Blu-Ray and the fact you can surf the net on it.

I used to think the PS3 was a big, glorified Blu-Ray player. Its now turning into a pretty good games console, therefore it has to be given respect. I wouldn't swap my 360 Elite for one though! :P

Gary, it may boil down to what machines you're friends have for exchanging games etc. Good luck in your choice.

ok cheers still not sure yet have had a ps1 and a ps2 so might just get a ps3 not too keen on the xbox controller lol

XBOX all the way a mate of mine can get games for £3 for it :P

i only bought a ps3 a week ago ,my 80gb one states that it plays ps1 games but not ps2?,i have a wii too, it's good for a laugh but not for hardcore gaming, all these systems have their pro's and cons ,the xbox 360 will benefit this christmas with it's current pricing but i've always been a sony man,can't wait for fallout 3 ,it'll be huge.
you'd expect the ps2 to be dead by now,but nooooooooooooo they are still making top titles for that baby and will do for sometime.
games are ace ,i'm a big kid,choose sony and worry not about the price difference.

I forgot to mention, it's pretty easy to buy a 40gb (or the new £160-170 60gb) version and simply replace the HD with a much bigger one.

i owned 5 xbox360s within a 2 year period , fuckin rrod .
the free courier service was good but my buyer confidance had gone by then so i put the last repaird one they sent me straight on ebay , shame realy , great games , shit hardware. although surely things have been sorted with the elite ?

anyhow love my ps3 , couldnt live without blurays , the web browser is a great addition and the games although pricey are stunning.

get yourself a ps3 gaz and while your at it ,treat yourself to a full hd tv ,

HD Ready is full HD.

there are two types of "hd ready"

720p and 1080p

p and i stand for progressive and interlaced p is better than 1

a tv that is sold as hd ready, is usually the 720, a "FULL hd" tv is 1080p

argos curries and all the other high street stores like to sell every tv without really advertising the difference



if you have a xbox360, you will get hd games, but not to the full potential, as the dvd doesnt have much room to store the film

however, a ps3 blu-ray disk holds way more, and although at the minute there doesnt seem too much difference in the graphics, soon it will be evident why this is a usefull format for them to have chosen


if you have sky hd, i think the signal is sent at 720p, and the 1080p tv's upscale the picture...

the blu-ray drive on a ps3 will send the picture AT 1080p without upscaling.. which is a better picture


1080p and 1080i are different in the whites and blacks that the screen can display, the better the white and black contrast, the better the depth on the screen.. higher possibilitys of black and white colour man that the tv can make more realistic picture giving things shadow and a kind of 3d effect


i run my ps3 on my 1080p 40inch samsung, and it is fucking amazing... i used to have it on a 720hd screen and the difference is massive..

the xbox at the minute is good, as good as the playstation, but plasystations history is very repetative..

sony know how to build the hardware.. they did the ps1 and ps2, pproduced the hardware and released both on more or less the estimated release dates.

the ps3 was delayed a bit for whatever reason...

but the games,
the ps1 came out with about 10 games available, the people programming them didnt have a clue what the system was capable of, after about 2 years the good/better graphic/gameplay/sound games came out...

same with the ps2... ffs, the first games that came out on the ps2 were shit.. really really shit... but they got better.. and now, most titles available on the xbox360 ar eout on the ps2... hmm

at the minute it looks like the xbox360 is outselling and beating the ps3... but in the next 6 - 12 months as the programmers learn a bit more about the way the system works, it is widely recognised that the ps3 will rocket in sales due to the games that will be available


the 60gig version of the ps3 is the only one that supports ps2 games
all of the other versions support ps1 but not ps2 games

the 80 gig version is a bit shitty, aparently the hard drive overheats

the 20gig had been discontinued due to hardware failiures

the 40gig version is the standard now, and the hard drive is very cheaply and easily upgraded to a 250gig one.
