nope. that wasn't funny either.

for racism being done with some sophistication and enough self-reference to make it satirical (while actually being amusing):

i saw that when it first showed ,and yes i found it hilarious, but i don't get why you did'nt find the eddie murphy sketch funny, especially the lone blackman dancing along.
i can take black humour directed at whites all day long ,it has me in stitches.

re. the eddie murphy thing: it was just sensationalisation of perceived values in a badly-composed and mistimed ditty. the dancing guy was okay i suppose but it has been done better before and since. imo there is no substance to it; no depth and little wit. if i were to be crude about it, the white man can laugh because it is such a pathetic sketch, the black man can laugh because it is extolling the murder of a race which used to exploit theirs. but each should have the power to think twice and realise why it is so very wrong to enjoy it.

this won't be popular but al jolson is funnier than that.

Al Jolson was really Asa Yoelson from somewhere in the USSR. Probably anglicized his name when he reached the US, as several others did.
Charles Bronson was something like Bukowsky, Woody Allen was Allen Konigsberg etcetera.

Reginald Hunter's whole act appears to be based on taking the mickey (shouldn't use that word) out of white people copying Charlie Williams from the 60's and 70's. It's mildly amusing the first few times you hear it, but is just banal.

agreed: al jolson is not funny in any meaningful sense (hence the deliberately clumsy analogy). but eddie murphy's sketch is worse. from a starting point of zero it might be okay. but you might hope for some more sophistication/awareness from somebody who willfully played the race card for filthy lucre in 'coming to america'.

Whilst we're on the subject of controversial topics, the death of Wendy Richard was kinda saddening for me - not least because she has conducted herself with dignity rather than sprawling herself across the tabloids.

I have nothing agin Ms Goody either. But I hope in 50 years time when we're looking back on this year, it will be Miss Brahms that will be remembered for her untimely demise rather than the other.

Good point. But that's the celebrity culture we now live in. If you want to point the finger, blame the millions who watch BB, buy Heat etc

I have a grudging admiration for Jade Goody. Despite her lack of intelligence, she has made her millions and has set herself and her bairns for life. She might be as thick as pig shit, but she wasn't so stupid when it comes to making a name for herself. The Jade Special edition of Heat Magazine was (last I heard) the best selling edition ever.
