Anyone know how to work with "foreign" characters?

I need to be able to replace all foreign* characters with their english counterparts. Anyone know how to do this?

At the moment I have a word macro which search longhand for particular ones and replaces them one at a time. But I have to keep adding to the list of foreign characters as I discover them in new documents - there must be a better way?

*Excuse my ignorance. There's a probably a better name for these. I'm talking about letters which get an accent, umlaut, grave or whatever in langiages such as french, german, spanish etc.

Oh never mind. I've sorted it now!
I suppose I'll have to keep this complete list of Dutch Millionaire Q&As to myself then

Just for the record, anyone with a similar predicament : Google something like "Normalized Unicode"
