here's a good one from Istenem's bumper book of facts:

what are the top five most expensive things by weight?

nb1 smart-arse answers like hydrogen and aerogel won't be tolerated.
nb2 diamonds, emeralds, rubies etc. count as one thing.
nobody ever wins on those things.

Having read that question in an earlier phoenix only this morning I would feel a fraud to answer all five. That said I'll happily jump in and bag the ones I knew/guessed before reading the answers.

Saffron
Diamonds (gemstones to be in keeping with nb2)

aha but i've moved the goalposts since then. truffles are not expensive at the moment because they have all gone off.

Saffron
Diamonds (gemstones to be in keeping with nb2)
so that is three (inc Mr B's precious metals)

two to go

I'll chuck in everyone's famous element, Californium. Currently retailing at $27 million per gram at your local Walmart.

Unless there's a more expensive element on sale these days. I read this in the 1973 Guinness Book of Records.

HE is right but it is still a metal so two to go.

one is ingested but not a food, the other is something (well two things) that many people see every waking hour

Yay, in that case I can legitimately keep guessing.

Have recent tax rises and economic factors caused petrol to sneak into the top 5?

Failing that are the two things substances used in monitors? I recall something to do with the colour production using miniscule amounts of some rare stuff.

:d: not eyeballs although it is close

:d: nothing liquid as they are all too heavy

:d: not monitor components either, they come under the rare metals

keep pressing and guessing

I will go with a complete guess then, as you can see it every waking hour - hair/fur?

nope. that one is a feat of technology and although you can see them, you'd only rarely look at them.

the other one is expensive not for raw materials but for Civ's socio-economic reasons.
