The firey Phoenix plays blackjack... 21

Post by Weyland »

...and if that thread title isn't good enough, many more interesting facts about the number 21 can be found here.

Anyway, we've not had a pub-related question for a while, so here it is:

George Orwell wrote an essay in 1946 in which he described the perfect London pub (apparantly a country pub has different requirments). But what was this hypothetical pub (also the title of the essay) called?

Ah, I knew there was a danger of someone knowing this one straight off. ;) Indeed, "The Moon Under Water" was the title, and Wetherspoons are said to have based all their pubs on it, and thirteen pubs in the chain are named after it. Personally I can't see it myself... ;)

Over to UP...

ta.
1p and 2p coins are currently worth more than face value due to the market price of copper but coin collectors will pay upwards of £50 for a 2p coin from which year?

Alright then.

The year that 2ps were first introduced must have been about 1969, so I'll try that.

thehut is closest so far.

clue: it is not just about minting quantities, one year the Royal mint made a cock-up on a proposed design amendment and didn't bother to recall the first issues.

Erm. Complete guess, but does the 2p not have the Prince of Wales' feather boa on it?

Therefore, it might be a year where something exciting happened to him. I'm sure he was invested in the 1960's, so I'll go for 1981, the year he started banging Diana.
