Rangers beat Sporting Lisbon last night.

Last time they played was when Rangers beat them in the 2nd round en route to the European Cup in 1972.

Over 2 legs (2nd round) they drew 6-6. After extra time Lisbon won the penalty shoot out.

So how come Rangers went through?

Only asking this question because I only found this out myself today!

was the penalty shoot-out just for a bit of ribald fun, like a band will do an encore regardless of whether anybody calls for one.

No but close.

The penalty shoot out was played in error. Why?

Hit 96 "homers," or whatever they're called, in a season?

I vaguely remember it being Tony Hart. I could be totally wrong though. :)
