I'll guess someone recent how about Hard fi?

PS like the classic crossword link with the last question. The word Numbers often used to represent cold, drugs etc in cryptic crosswords.

Better show my working here.

Well, whilst trying to work out the answer, I noticed

1->4 = 10 = 5 x 2
1->5 = 15 = 5 x 3
1->6 = 21 = 7 x 3
1->7 = 28 = 7 x 4
1->8 = 36 = 9 x 4
1->9 = 45 = 9 x 5

Therefore, if we take a million...

1->1,000,000 = ??? = 1,000,001 x 500,000 = 500,000,500,000

Anywhere close?

Yes

or

1 to x

= (x) times (x+1) / 2

or x squared plus x/ 2

Ah. Your way is a bit easier!

Okay. Cheery subject - capital punishment. In what year was the last death sentence handed down by a judge in the British Isles?? - and for a bonus point can you tell me where it was handed down?

Just as an aside to the previous question, the genius that is Gauss was reported to have been given a similar question by a teacher at school, asking what the total from 1 to 100 was. Within a couple of minutes he replied 5050, the correct answer, and had worked this out by realising that if you add the highest and lowest numbers together, they equal 101, as does every pair from thereon in. His total was 10100, and halfing this number as he had 50 pairs gave 5050.

Not bad for someone who was around 9 at the time.
