sophisticated crosswords often have playful subgames within them (known as NINAs (always capitals)).

it all started with cartoonist al hirschfeld's line drawings, NINA was the name of his daughter and he'd include her name hidden in each of his works.

in this picture there are three NINAs. can you find them?

not until you use photoshop to copy the picture and highlight the NINAs in reddish orange

okay:

here is another of hirschfeld's drawings. they are beautiful.

anyway the question is this.

on january 29 1992 a japanese cargo ship capsized and lost a crate of 30,000 xxxxs. they have survived as the items in question are designed to float.

after 15 years they are due to wash up western scotland later this year. what are they?
