Matt's on the right track, indeed only 3 faces are visible at any one time.

27 isn't right, but it's a start.

Well, as 3 * 9 is indeed 27, I'll go with my theory about each corner square being one instead of three, and go for 19.

Nope, the corner squares do count. The answer is higher than 27
