I hope I haven't wasted precious seconds opening up word trying (and failing) to find the 1/4 symbol

Right, speaking of measures of beer...

A yard of ale is very roughly 3 pints. But what extra item is a newly qualified submarine sailor supposd to drink from the bulb of the yard glass (along with the beer) as part of his unofficial qualification ritual?

Surprisingly close. It is aquatic, or at least its nickname is.

Spot on. I would also have accepted dolphin, but how you'd fit one of those into the bulb of a yard glass, I have no idea... ;)

I refer to the compulsory "Drinking of the fish from the bulb of the yard" imposed upon a newly qualified submarine sailor by one's qualified shipmates at a tavern ashore. The "fish" in question is actually the Submarine Warfare Insignia (also known as a "dolphin"), a uniform breast pin worn by enlisted men and officers of the United States Navy to indicate that they are qualified in submarines.

Take it away YE.
