I honestly cannot think of a better answer than "Because it would look silly".

Is it something to do with the original format of the show (which isn't from the UK - It's French, I think) having rounds of 45 seconds rather than 30?

Nope. The rounds were always 30 seconds in length.

You're not far wrong saying it would look silly, but there's a more practical reason for it.

i've seen a video on youtube which has them discussing this.

in the pilot episode rounds were 45 seconds (as in des chiffres et des lettres) but the great british public is more sophisticated than the surrenderers so we only need 30 seconds.

And it would still only require a 45 second clock.

Think what happens to the clock between rounds (I realise that this might be a bit trickier if you've never been in the Countdown studio but you should be able to guesS).

its to do with the clock resetting back to the start, it continues round in order to get back to the beginning.

If thats correct i will have to pass the question on to a willing volunteer as I have to get back to my revision

I'd go with JimmyMacs' view, would save on having to have 'reverse' mechanisms in it to move it back up to 0?

It's simply because it would be too expensive to make a clock with a forward and reverse mechanism.

By your cunning use of quotations, i would guess it is someone who has just died. All I can think of is James Brown, but he certainly wasn't a Jazz chap.
