Did he get busted by fingerprinting or DNA evidence from something he left on the things he sent? Hair, sweat etc?

Close. He was actually sending the letter from his local church. He wrote it in MS Word, then saved it on a disk and sent it to the police. Little did he realise , but his username and name of the church were in the metadata. A schoolchild could have found this information - and he was arrested not long later.

Having evaded capture for 20 years, he had sent a postcard to the cops asking if he could be traced by sending in a disk. They took out a newspaper advert and said no, so he went ahead with it!
