A brilliant question as copied from another messageboard which I occasionally frequent (if that makes sense)...

Who scored at Wembley for Kevin Keegan's Newcastle Utd, and later in his career, came on as a substitute for Man U in a European match to replace an injured Peter Schmeichel ?

hmm. could it be that the goal for NUFC was an og by an opposition player? or is that too convoluted?

i don't know a huge amount about football but i guess andy cole

Nope it wasn't an own goal, and it isn't Andy Cole.

I'll give you a clue though, you don't need to know a huge amount about football!

Hmm, is that cos it isn't football related?? The toon played in 2 FA cup finals under keegan but didn't score in either of them as far as i remember. also got hammered by Man U in Charity shield but again, didn't score...

did they get to wembley when he played for them?

stumped.

It's definitely football-related!

The answer is someone you'll definitely have heard of, even if you know very little about football.

When you get the answer, you'll kick yourself. And then you'll probably hunt me down and give me a good kicking.

how about this, the trainer was an ex-pro at NUFC who came on for (to treat) schmeichel but not as a substitute

Not even close. It's not a trick question.

This player definitely scored for Newcastle at Wembley, and definitely replaced Peter Schmeichel in goals.

I watched it with my own eyes.

Played at Wembley when Kevin Keegan was involved with the club?

They lost 2 FA cup finals in the 90's and didn't score. Was a Semi or Quarter Final played there perhaps?? They also lost a Charity Shield 4-0 to Man U.

Still proper stumped

You're probably thinking a bit too much about this.

You don't need any specialist football knowledge.

You don't even need any football knowledge.

Think laterally!

Was it Kevin Keegan?

He played for Newcastle, could have replaced Schmeichel in nets in some sort of Testimonial as he played in Europe for a time...

Sorry, thehut. You're not even close.

You need to think outside the box!

I think i need to retire to the box as it's beginning to wind me up...

hopefully by tomorrow, someone brighter than me will have figured it out. :P

is thinking outside the box a cryptic clue?
two different players who share the same name?

No. It's not a cryptic clue. There's no hidden meaning behind the question, it was the same player on both occasions, and when you find out the answer, you'll go "oh aye. so it was. That Cardinal's a bit of a sly dog".

Maybe the evening crowd will be able to guess it. If not, I'll have to start giving clues.
