(after looking on Wikipedia) Okay, seeing as there's been a few on-this-day questions recently, here's another one: The word "Dord" caused someone great embarasment on this day (28th Feb) in 1939. How?

i read about this a while ago. it was a dictionary compiler who wrote on an entry slip 'D or d' meaning an abbreviation for dead or died. but the sub-editor read it as Dord and the word was included in the dictionary output. iirc it was many years before anybody questioned the validity of Dord.
