i'll give you a clue: the old english word for this animal was coppe which is now wholly obsolete but it does still survive in a modern English word which relates only to the animal in question.

Out of correctness, there was indeed a cob fish. http://www.club-aquatica.com/AQ3_fish/Cob.htm. So that would make one more creature that has the name 'cob'.

the only thing i can think of which would make it spooky is Cockle Picking deaths - assuming the sand reference means its a coastal area?
