the reels were programmed to spin round when you canceled, and it seemed like instead of just stepping back to the start position, when the reels span, the hold buttons lit up, you could get the "step" on the reels which was just a nudge...
cut and paste on a routine in the program to light the holds up and make it look pretty when you canceled a superhold.... and that routine cut and pasted to the other machines.... non of which would have been noticed in test as canceling a superhold and bashing the buttons isnt something done in normal play?
or maybe, exactly what i wrote, but put in deliberately!!!
