Say you enter on £2 and the gamble is to £2.50 or 50p if you lose the gamble and only have 1 symbol lit then you now only have the option of collecting 50p or exchanging for feature. If you had 2 symbols lit then it would knock 1 symbol out and you could then continue gambling now on 50p for £1 or nothing, So in real terms its pointless.
Only thing to note is that if you win the 1st gamble and all 3 symbols are lit, when you exchange in you will have 3 Odd/Even or Hi/Lo already lit to get a bonus. 2 symbols = 2 Odd/Even e.t.c

I guess you could describe those things as 'gamble lives'.
I seem to remember one machine (with 3 hi/lo reels) which would start you off on a Skill Bonus if you exchanged in with all three lives intact.
Money Mad Martians (Barcrest) used to offer an extra 'gamble life' as part of the bonus, so you could continue turbo gambling if you lost a gamble.

This machine may at times offer a choice where the player has every chance of bankruptcy
