Googling pubs

Anyone else noticed that since about a year ago if you google "pubs near xxxx" you get a white box with a few of them on top of the map, getting in the way of what you want to see. Then if you click X to get rid of that box all the pubs disappear?
Really annoying. Is there anyway round this?

Try using

https://www.google.com/mapmaker

(ignore that it's intended for map editing)

Google are gradually phasing out their "classic" maps interface in favour of the new one which is worse in many ways.
