why people don't play open

a certain pub i go into (because it has a good cellar) recently replaced a paragon for a open/dice/whatever. i realise that it is the cheapo option but i have spoken with the publican about why this was such a catastrophic move.

here are some of many reasons why open is shite:

1. nobody ever plays it
1a. (because the customer expects some value for money.)
2. it forces mugs to play £1 games which are entirely uninteresting
3. it is far too slow
4. whoever wrote the questions has c&ped wikipedia without any regard to fact. this is both boring and misleading for the customer.
5. the questions are so long and therefore the fount is so tiny that you have to read all this crap before you actually know what it is asking you. when you eventually get to the salient point of the question, the bar has called orders and you are the only one left in the pub, cursing your rotten luck to be playing this game. by the way, what was the first number one out of these three forgettable singles: X, Y, Z, Z again.
6. the games are not attractive. at all.
7. for the above reasons, see 1.

a couple of isolated incidents:
in a moment of weak blindness, i played the boxing game (which has nicknames of boxers rather than infringe any copyrights  ). the first question was some obvious 2+2 job, then the second question asked "what is the maximum swooping speed of an american condor?" the second question on a £1 game? boys, oh dear. really?

it might have been witty if there had been the (very) obvious reference to MP&THG but no, it was a straight (assumed) fact.
you would have to say that that is incredibly lazy production values for what is a static game with minimal value for the customer's purchase. any idiot knows that his consumer is the end user not the cretinous middleman.

and just before i lost the will to live, another clownish game asked me "who was the 16th president of the USA?" aside from the obvious, and assuming your man in the pub hasn't bothered to learn the list, who cares?

please feel free to add your own reasons why your local should not have such an unappetising menu.

I must say I have become increasingly infuriated with the opens... my main two objections are:

1. They are slower to get going than David Hasslehoff running along a beach, cradling his daft buoyancy aid!

2. The themes of many of the Q & A games just seem shite, as if they have been put together for the sake of fulfilling the quota.

However, I can't say I am entirely unhappy with them - this is mainly due to the fact that I don't play on a serious basis and don't have to tolerate them too often!

Slow slow slow slow slow slow slow slow

And the games take too long. There's a line between value for money and wasting my time.

And they're slow too.

<Getting the whiff of a tenuous FB link>

:)

There's one in a Beefeater near me and I simply will not touch it after a Friday night escapade on it once. Shockingly bad games, shockingly bad design... ...and receiving an electric shock from the screen didn't even deter me that night. Looking back, I really wonder why?

Let me check - what's the Dewey decimal code for prime numbers? And remind me again what date such and such a totally forgettable musician was born on? And the aggregate attendance at Liverpool's home matches in 2003?

Having said all that (and the spoilering on Open games is really heavy-handed), I still think they're better than itBox, Ind:e and KUDOS at the moment. I'd put them behind Paragon and level with GamesNet in what I'd play currently.

I have had enough of the OPENs. Boring, slow and dulllllllllllllllllll

FATSPANNER: Why have you done this to what was, at one point, one of the most enjoyable machines to play?

I think the operators just ditch them in sites they have contractual obligations to rather than anywhere they expect them to get played

The choice of games is just unbelievably shite, and as said very slow, and they just don't look appealing at all. Give me a super fast paragon any day. 8)

Oh... ate £3 of my meagre earnings the other night - another reason to add to my previous list :|

What's the name of Wyclef Jean's estranged brother-in-law?

Out of all the machines I still frequent these days (which isn't many) the local open is the only one where I usually leave empty handed- a combination I put down to:- a. my mediocre playing skills b. playing against myself cos no-one else is playing anything on it despite it having an humungous selection of games and c. my goldfish like short term memory- 'hey BAKERS DOZEN- what's that- do I win on that? (plays it) Hey OPEN THE BOX- have I ever won on that? Is it any good? (plays) HEEYY- STAR WARS, what's this? HEY THAT WAS A QUID A GAME! etc- (repeat at fortnightly intervals)

The fact that nobody is ever on it, even though the fruity next to it has a constant turnaround of folk, says it all really
