I've played CQ a few times now.

I haven't won a single quid off the thing.

No; I've had three or four goes in the interests of exploration but the questions go pretty tough pretty quickly. In a similar vein has anyone won twice on the same TIOLI? I got to within three questions of a prize on one which I'd won on a few weeks back. Also, I found a 50p game which seemed to offer either no lives or one life at random.

I haven't, and I don't really bother wasting another £1 these days to find out (I only tend to play the £1 a go variety).

One odd experience I had this week was on an ItBox in a VERY central London location where all the other playable games were completely empty yet the TIOLI had been left untouched and I managed to get my largest ever prize out of it. The old adage about horses for courses has never felt more apt...

I get a sense that there's really not many people capable of emptying TIOLI. Last big machine night I had I played about ten ItBox 54s in varying states, but what linked them all was that TIOLI was paying - both 50p and £1 games.

i am adequate and i play SWP (but seldom titbox) much more than your average Joe but (barring a fluke) TIOLI is beyond me so i have given up on it. i know that there are people in London who can whoop my tush on it.
having witnessed people who have the knowledge to ace this i am impressed. those of you who have the level of knowledge required probably take it for granted as something which comes naturally (albeit with the necessary spadework).
i can assure you that 99.5% of the population can get nowhere near. and i flatter myself to be in the other 0.4% the 0.1% are those of you who are winning well on it. good luck to you.

as somebody who is probably best described as a good amateur, i can do HB and CQ with few problems, GI60s is not my cup of tea but TIOLI is a couple of notches beyond my capability.

so it is possible NS that the itbox you referred to is one i had been on. if it was in the spoons on leicester square then it probably was. i see you have beaten me to the new paragons in yates's next door. git ;)

So ends my best ever run on the titboxes. And if I was having my best ever run, then...

Roger

I wondered that myself having JP-ed it quite a few times and moved on like you. So I decided to try it again after jp-ing and what did I get for question 3..

'played for which Italian football team in 2003

a. Inter 2. Juventus 3. Torino 4. Fiorentina'

I hope that answers your question! :D

It was actually the O'Neills the other side of the Square. As for the Paragons in Yates's, I did have a quick look but apart from DOND there is virtually nothing there I would bother with - I have always found the Paragon game selections really poor, although I accept they have started to add one or two reasonable games recently such as 1 vs. 100. I did however manage to post a simply HUGE top score on Word Up on the one that has that (well, it was at least 1000 points anyway  ) so that one has been officially 'killed'...

don't sell yourself short. 16xx is a clearance or a very good non-clearance so i guess you got the free fiver. (and ruined it for me.) mind you my pint was awful so i was glad to get to a proper pub afterwards.

It would have been a clearance because I'm certainly not good enough to get 1600+ without the bonus 500 points. To be honest it feels a little like cheating to clear on Word Soup as compared to Word Up given that at least once in any go it will let you play a word (or give you one via Help) that you are pretty sure isn't valid.

Further to earlier post about CQ went back again to a place Id previously done and mugged thru the spoilers, won the jp, but guess what - it was £3! That surely takes the biscuit- 50p go for a £3 jp! That has got to be the lowest ever JP for a SWP! Unless someone knows different...

First of all, good work. So are you saying that the prize for the longest word on that CQ endgame was £3, or that you got one of the shorter words for £3 but a £5 was theoretically available? Either way I agree the CQ top prize is rubbish. I guess one would assume that it would take about thirty plays to give another endgame opportunity (i.e. it would want to take another £15 before offering another £5). Can't see that happening in many places as it's not much fun when not paying, and hidden away on the back screen as well.

Grecian - sorry, to clarify- that was the Jp - prizes were £3, £2 and a £1. Seen people playing it to be fair, and I don't reckon its a bad game- easy to pick up, bit basic, but hey- who doesn't know how crosswords work, so money is going in.

Actually this is meant to be a WU thread. Not really played it much for ages but rocked in a 1973 for a fiver  first go today which might be a PB today.

Best word was only "qualities" which adds (for me) food for thought that the best way to approach this is many reasonable length words rather than the previously employed tactic of double Z followed by L and f*ck the rest of the board.
