Indeed - to soften.
If you'd ever done a cryptic crossword, you'd know that one!

Bob,
I am still beating you 7-6. I still have better words and scores than you. If anyone can claim the title of "champion", it is me.
But well done for *officially* taking second place.
Bad luck UP. More big-game experience would surely see you beating the mini-man.

The Listener is a great puzzle - just dont expect to rattle it off in an hour.
I used to do it regularly at uni. Once you've broken the duck, its not so scary.

Played WU on three machines last night down in Gosport and all had been reset (i.e. high scores removed) since I last played. This seemed to have the happy result that the points required for £1 had dropped back to 750 (I actually made a few quid over the night which is not how things normally go).
Is this happening all over the place, or did I just get lucky ?

it seems that a lot of paragons have been reset. EWQ keeps the best scores so i don't worry about local boards as i can soon top them again. the new arrivals seem very good, pints for prizes particularly appeals, hex with a slightly challenging time element.
anyway back on topic i pwn exeter now, the highlights were SHEEPISHNESS at the horse & dray and QUARTERMASTERS at the victoria but i will pm EWQ with the minutiae.

Ealing and Acton were unceremoniously bummed yesterday by marauding hordes of Team VBob (well, two of us).
Three scores of over 2000, three great words (quizzically, jurisdictions, tranquillizing) and a couple of jackpots.
Ernest W Quality was not in attendance. A source close to Mr Quality suggested that he was out playing soldiers.

I need more of a challenge than another 5-2 like last time.
The challenge is accepted for next time, if you want. I was feeling quite rough yesterday, so had to decline - the champ needs time to prepare!

I bet you enjoyed carrying all the quids I won for you on TT, WC and Brainteaser too.

Ernest W Quality was not invited. A source close to Mr Quality suggested that he was roped into paintballing with some clowns.

Rest assured that Ernest W Quality would have been invited, had he not already agreed to ball it up with some sailors in Royston.
