Quizmaster: The performance depends on how good a mood the machine is in, sometimes the first go can be £1/£2 followed by a £3/£4 but i appreciate these things are normally diminishing returns depending on what it's got ready to pay out.

We only get an hour for lunch so only 4 games maximum at 15 minutes a time (Grecian, to answer your point, emptying it is almost impossible because in our experience the ItBoxes will "Time Out" a game of Hex at about the 15 minute mark and take you back to the menu screen with no recognition for monies won on that play)

As for LL, we were playing in a pub and LL turned up to empty the fruity next door, spotted the list and told the guv'nor of the pub. We all had a chat, everyone was amicable, I gave the LL guy my (genuine) number as he said head office might want to speak to me (although no-one ever followed it up). As I said yesterday, they were worried about a website download (meaning it could be at risk nationally) as opposed to 3 anoraks with a pad and paper compiling their own copy of the database

"New" answers are down to 2 or 3 per day now, usually when we have to bite the bullet to get through a tricky column (Abbreviations, Welsh Male & Fenale Names all in the same column of 3 for example)

Guess Hex Maniac, with it's new categories will mean a new list

As for Cryptic Clues, a lot of the categories overlap with Hex but we did also compile some of the exclusive ones too (Disney, at the sweetshop) and they also come in handy for PMP too. Best score at Cryptic Clues was 3,300. Best win £6 (not necessarily both at the same time!)

Interesting stuff Hexpert - I commend you on your dedication. Have you ever considered applying similar rigour to some of the quiz games?

Hex is (was) an ideal candidate because of the amount of time it gives you to solve each Hexagon. With Cryptic the longer you take the less you score so the harder it is to reach the prizes and PMP can drain the timer in seconds when you get near the Jackpot

Hex's categories and numbers of letters lends itself to a methodical approach as described yesterday

We did start compiling IT Soccer but have now found a 4th member of the team who's football knowledge is frighteningly broad and deep and made the list redundant

Quiz games are harder to sub categorise, Do I put all the Who, When, What wuestions in separate lists and them sort them alphabetically. Then it takes too long to retrieve them. Maybe electronically possible as I've seen surmised on here before

Anyway, off to lunch to try our luck

I can appreciate the hard work involved here but in the end it comes down to the same thing for me:

- 4 games at 50p a go = £2 stake

- total prize (being generous) = £9 (£4 + £2 + £2 + £1)

- profit per hour (before drinks) = £7

- profit per player between the three of you = £2.33

So even if you are hard-faced and can find pubs where all three of you can get away with not buying a drink then you are probably making about 1/3 of what the 18 year-old kid behind the bar is on.

I realise this is 'fun' whereas working behind the bar is 'work' but if ever I've heard of a way of playing the quiz machines that sounds like work, this is it.

And then the killer:

So you are playing a game that not only displays the usual behaviour of throwing spoilers your way once you have passed the prize it is happy to dish out, it is a game with a known bug that predictably ends your go in a non-recoverable and non-provable way!

Like I said, I can appreciate the effort involved but I can GUARANTEE that with the hard work and dedication you guys are displaying that better rewards are available elsewhere.

Here endeth the lesson.

that may be so NS. well it is so.

but there is some pleasure in playing these parlour games, some people make unusual chutney for a hobby, other people knit beestes from doctor who. i can't speak for Hexpert but i enjoy a pint and the knowledge that i can pay for it with a talent rather than money. any surplus cash is a bonus to be frittered on wine, women and song.

i realise that there are some hugely talented people who play SWP for a source of earnings: all power to the people who have got that good at it.

Lunchtimes are just for "fun". 3 pints of diet coke and a play on the machine

Today
2 goes at Cryptic yielded £1
1 game of Hangman3 = £0
1 game of Snap = £0
4 games of Hex = £3

Broke even, made a loss when you include the cost of the drinks

But, we'd've been spending that money somewhere and it's a bit of entertainment or an hour and we're breaking even/making a small profit which is beeter than paying for drinks AND losing money in the machines

Myself and the football guy have sarted spending our Saturdays in various locations trying to play "seriously". Last Saturday we turned £14 into £52 but it took a day so, again, between 2 of us, it's less than the minimum wage but I had a day out, got chatted up by a girl half my age, had my food and drink paid for by the machines and went home with £2 more than I went out with Not enough to retire on

My mate, the football buff is currently unemployed and was bragging that he hadn't had to use a cashpoint for a fortnight because when funds get low he scoops some winnings from the machines and that tides him over till his next win (mind you, he has short arms and long pockets so no wonder the money goes a long way!!)

Hexpert and his hextra-ordinary lists

Post by leamgem »

I and a friend like Hexpert, have devised a fairly conclusive list of Hex answers apart from Abbreviations, (spelt Abbrieviations on the game!), Welsh Male and Female Names, Surnames and Computer Languauges cos we can always play around these subjects.

The only hiccup we used to get was when an answer had been mispelt by Hex, although we've now come to remember these errors and we're able to fill in the gaps accordingly. Generally we do pretty well, though if Hex isn't gonna pay - it won't! There have been several instances where we have answered around 20-25 questions without any cash prize in sight and the questions have actually reverted back to easy subjects i.e. Eastenders, Newspapers, Army Regiments etc - a sign, we think, that the game is up!

The intersting thing about this list is that it can be utilised to very good effect on similar hangman type games - Cryptic Clues and Pints Make Prizes. We've probably achieved a better hit rate on Cryptic Clues as more often that not we reach £5; we've never seen a cash prize beyond this amount. Similarly, Hex has never paid us more than £5. But the best game for the ultimate in cash prizes is, (when it's not being infuriatingly clever with it's bonuses and annoyingly difficult with it's alternative subjects, Terror Groups, Glass and Dr.Who Planets to name but a few), Pints Make Prizes! The sound of the top prize of £10 dropping out is music to our ears:-)

I compiled a list for Football Crazy a while ago and had it running on a PC Hangman program. But I got bored and posted all my answers in here.
I know. I printed that list off and went and used it round every pub that still had FC in it. It was by far and away the most useful post I can remember on here, so cheers. Any chance of you following suit then Hexpert :) Hey- will swap for my Cryptic List....
