If you ever ran into Dominic from Bmth, he ended up with a boozer (The Brittania) in Poole from his quiz winnings, mostly from Strike it Rich and friends.

I'm not allowed to play his fruits. *sigh*.

It's interesting to see how people like Suri managed the transition from the old standalones with finite question banks and today's monsters packed with a whole library of spoilers. It obviously goes to show that the man (and his ilk) have a gift when it comes to machines. I have often envied savants like Kim Peek and would very much like to gain such miraculous cognitive skills even if it meant by extension that I couldn't wipe my own arse.

I have done pretty well on certain games having learnt from my mistakes but new spoiler sets seem to come along faster than I can learn the old ones. Some spoliers of course are practically unlearnable for the non-savant, for example the stupid maths questions on Pot the Lot (in any case it would be easy to host a sub-program in the game code to randomly create difficult sums at will).

There is of course another way to guarantee quiz machine success. That is obtaining the job of the guy who writes the questions. Some people say to me, "they wouldn't go round taking money out of their own machines like that!" but I can't see why not. Better to earn money via a tax-free quiz windfall than by PAYE. Furthermore I expect most of the questions are bought in bulk from a supplier who takes payment and moves on. Not the worst idea to learn all the answers to your own question bank.

C Capers was a good choice of game for him to become super-proficient at. I bet he doesn't play much Cluedo or Trivial Pursuit 2 where the dice roll decides your fate, or that ridiculous one where you play the robber running away from the cop and you never get offered the final swagbag to win the cash (I once played that game for half an hour before walking out in disgust, still dozens of steps ahead of the fuzz).

I'm going out now and I'm taking my notebook with me. All answers must be learnt.

It surely is the same guy Keegan. I've since discussed him with one or two of the London players who were active at that time and they knew him well. From what they said they didn't think Suri stood out particularly back in the early 90s i.e. he was only doing what many others were able to do, but seemed from what I saw to have moved up another level by still raiding machines in the modern era. Q-time is right to speculate that Suri picked his machines well, for sure. I doubt Suri wastes time on many of today's rubbish, even the stuff I'd play to win £3-£4, say.

Are you based in London, Keegan?

I think that we are focussing too much on people who specialise on one machine. Paddy Spooner was much in the Brewis mould being primarily very good at one machine(adders and ladders) and emptying machines down to its last 10p. If Suri goes into a pub and the CC is shit what is he going to do?. Who is best a person who earns an ave say of £15 an hour jackpotting 1 game or a person who can make £20 an hour nibbling on four games. The specialist tends to make money in fruitful periods with fallow periods ( the period between losing favourite game & learning another ) whilst the multi game approach has a more consistent level of return with game removal has less of an impact. How long does a savants photographic memory last for?

True Cool, very true, although Suri seemed very proficient on WWTBAM and Monopoly too, and also won more on Texas Hold Em' Quiz than I ever have done on his first go in front of me.

strange the name KEEGAN. I was on a training run along Southsea seafront this morning when I came across a couple jogging one of which was wearing a KEEGAN shirt. Dominic was he originally from Manchester?
The Bournemouth contributor must surely know Nick and Don. Brittania Poole I will be visiting!

I think somebody posted that Suri could win on millionaire when it had 'gone' no money offered on 32,000. If its true total respect , but odd as millionaire lasted for years on itbox/ gamesnet and with itbox in particular anybody with a sniff of a win in none win mode would have the game removed pronto!

Maybe Suri was a little more successful than Mr Brewis in not over-cooking the golden goose?

I think Grecian knows that area pretty well...!

Unfortunately my pool league takes me away from machines tomorrow night.

I did meet someone tonight though who claimed to have seen a certain "Nil Satis" in London a few weeks ago!

Fotherz is right Keegan - I don't work a million miles away from Farringdon; certainly near enough to be au fait with the general paucity of interesting machines in that area...!

Ahem...

I did encounter one of the other 'names' on here as recently as Friday night, but I won't break a confidence by naming them unless they are happy for me to do so (it was in the Rocket at Euston if you are trying to think if it was you!). I can't remember if I bumped into someone else less recently than that but if I did, apologies for my appalling memory - it's old age you see!

What I would say is that I don't think I'd be that impressive to see play, or at least I haven't been since the Pepsi Quiz all but disappeared. Sure, I can win an achievable Jackpot on one of the few games where that is still possible but I certainly couldn't do so on, for example, a Caveman Capers which had already been 'done'. It may be that even Suri can't do that, however - having seen the full range of games during my time playing them I simply find it impossible to believe that ANYONE could make a living on 95% of the games that are out there, and even on the 5% you are reliant on the state of the game on each machine.

I think my name should be on that machine! (on spot the difference)
