Similarly, I'm reasonably confident there is some at least some basic correlation between my drunkenness and the fact that I am terrible at this game.

Do we have to play the game "most points * most pints" or inversely proportional? Least points? :) I was drunk enough the other day to walk away from a game halfway through, so there's my starter for ten! ;)

First of all, I still hate this game and all pointless conversations about it. Secondly, I must say what a fantasic sight that video was. I can now see how far away from being "sh*t" at this game I am, rather than "utterly sh*t" which is the level that currently rate myself at.

My question is this:
When (which is not often) that I play WU, the £1 prize is always 1400+ points away, and there are very few extra time letters (Q,Z etc). The letters available seem very difficult to use to get a decent score. Your grid also had the £1 prize 1000+ points away, but had loads of extra time letters (which you used to get 3 minutes or so of play). How do you get a grid like that, or were you just lucky?

Regardless, I take my hat off to you UP, totaly out of my league...

cheers Ed. the pub that was in is one i go to once a week and the other punters have learnt not to play WU there any more. so £1 is normally between 1550-2000 in there.
re. letter distribution: a virgin machine tends to give loads of easy letters so it is relatively easy to clear but you won't get a mammoth score. haggard madams which have been repeatedly bummed by Bob tend to give more nasty letters and fewer S/T/R/E/A etc. Z, X and J aren't really a problem as there are plenty of short words which can burn them HAJJ, PIXY, ADZ but Qs normally need the U. JQXZ give extra time to sort out trickier letters like V, C, or too many of the same vowel.
newer shitboxes start at 1700ish for £1 and go down unless someone local can clear, this seems to have demoralised players and it is not getting played as much as before. as for making the grids give you nasty/bonus letters you can only force it to give you them by winning money out before and making the software clam up. It is still rare to have an impossible game. EWQ's website has a tactics section which gives the anatomy of a clearance, not quite the same tactics as i use but it is very good.

Cheers UP. I'll have a read, but the chance of me making a clearup is somewhere between nil and zero.

Ah it's ok i've found it... i can see where i fall short now.

is there a dictonary available, or can anyone help me with some common Q, X, Z and 3 letter words, they seem to be the reason i fail so badly, when i spend half the time trying to get rid of 1 Z

everybody is good at something.
for those of us with an interest in beating a machine through skill, have a peep at this. these guys are phenomenal.

makes you appreciate that to get to a high level of anything is an impressive achievement, most of us can relate to how much better at football the pros are than us but this is also true across the board. kendo is much more than posturing with sticks, there is more to skiing than sliding down a mountain and bullfighting is not just dancing with cows.

pity i'm not good at something which could make me pots of money through sponsorship.

Oh how i'd love to be able to clear the board on WU and take the oh so gracious £20 JP, a measly 1200 high score is my best. Congrats.
