A pal of mine technicolor-yodelled a litre bottle of Archers in his back room after we'd won two of them at a quiz night (to keep it slightly on topic!) the smell of peaches is something I can't ever quite handle now.

Early/mid 1985 , a few pubs had toaster sized quiz machines for fun , which we used to play . Then QM1 came out - same questions but £10 max win . " Flying Horse " QM was rare , thank God , never got the hang of that .QM2 was OK but short-lived .
Then was Question Time , same as QM , but any score over 46,000 reset the limit for £10 back to the minimum- 12,000 ? so the skill was getting to 45,000 ish and stopping . QT 2 and 3 were tougher .
Thinking back , there was one called Mastermind in a pub near Leicester Square early 1985 . Only one I ever saw and crap .
For GUAB s I used to fly to Jersey once a month . The company used it as a test ground for new programmes which then hit London about 6 weeks later . 4 days intensive play ( and lots of Mary Ann)
later I knew every answer on the " new " London machines .

I like the Jersey anecdote. One question though- how did you actually find this out. Was it a chance observation whilst on holiday or was it well known amongst the pro community?

My cousin lives there and came over to visit family . We went to a pub & he saw a GUAB . He said there were 100's on Jersey ( not quite true ) so I took a ferry over the next week . First pub , GUAB , green screen - so not a 7 or 8 . Turned out tobe a 10 . Bought a pint of excellent Mary Ann bitter and was given a " passport " listing every Mary Ann pub on the island . The idea is that you get a stamp in each pub and get free drinks or food when the passport is full .
Every pub in this " Bible " had a GUAB , either a 9 ( quite new in London ) or a 10 ( unseen )
After a bad ferry journey back , I decided to fly in future . I did tell a few other pros but don't know if any went

I got into playing them for a living after watching a pro player do a GUAB at Euston around the summer of 1986. He gave me a few invaluable tips and I've never looked back since.

And it's miles easier now to make dough than it was then.

From memory there were 4 GUAB 7 's round Euston at that time . One in the pub to the left ; one to the right ; one in the cafe and the last in the bar upstairs .Lovely little run !
Hold on , that might have been 1987 !!

Could have been '87. It was the one in the cafe. It's a Burger King now.

quizmasters claim that it is miles easier to make money now then then is total unmitigated bollocks!

If it were true why then are there far fewer serious players around now?
The potential to make money was greater then although not always realised.
The turnover of games excluding GUAB was slower then now
Games had less protection therefore easier to exploit
Far more food places had them
Games filled up more quickly as more people played them and there was only one game on a terminal so people had no choice

someone organise a vote quick Cool v Quizmaster who is right?

Of course there is the occasional money making gem every now and then now but rarely.......
