Roulette season begins on Channel JG

Post by JG »

It was a French mathematician. I think. I also think that 36 was chosen as it is divisible by so many other numbers. Evens, 3s, 4s, 6s, 9s, 12s, 18s and the longest shot 36s. Many variants have shot up and never been as popular. 36 is a magic number in gambling terms, it caters to a wide range of fixed odds possibilities.
We all know that the numbers add up to 666, number of the devil. Not so much an idle fact, more of a scary resonance of the damage this game can do to a man.
Many on line poker tables now have a little roulette icon, well not always so little. Often it screams at you to stop messing about at £0.10/£0.20 and come and gamble some wedge on the definitive casino game.
Roulette traverses a thousand different languages. Somalian, Kosovan, Polish whatever, may not understand any fruit apart from Bar-X, but present them with a roulette wheel and no further instruction necessary.
It's a worldwide institution and for good reason, it's gambler's opium. You think you won't be sucked in, but by God, you can get it bad.
He hadn't heard his wife running a bath in the morning. He hadn't smelt the toast and the coffee from downstairs. Neither had he heard her car engine ticking over as she scraped the ice from the windscreen. She had gone, joined the masses and driven to work. He had fallen asleep at 5:46am, which was about five minutes after he crawled into bed. He was numb from the feet upwards in every sense. The central heating had long since clicked off and the house temperature was well below 15 degrees celcius. Every last drop of testosterone had been drained from his body. This was more than buying entertainment, this was total rapage of a flawed psyche. His soul was filled with 0/2 splits and Martindale double ups that finally, finally, finally blew up spectacularly. He had lost track of how often he'd loaded that cashier page. 424. That was his three digit security number. That was one number that never let him down. Deposit succesful. Again and again. Alas, the selection of colour was not, which led him to trouble.
The worse thing was not the loss of time.
Neither was it the loss of money at certain points.
Neither was it the fact he was tired and really feeling the cold.
Neither was it the total lack of libido.
Neither was it the sick feeling in the pit of the stomach that he'd have to keep a cheery awake face on at work, due to an external inspection.
It was when he first checked the alarm clock.

He was well versed in going to bad at daft o'clock and waking up at exactly the right time. 8:45 was clocking in time. It took him 5 minutes to throw on the work clothes and have a quick spray. 5 minutes to clean his teeth and have a quick pee. 5 minutes to grab some toast whilst running the engine to clear the ice. 10 minutes to drive to work. 3 minutes late. Just about acceptable. Traffic was bad was the line.

I digress.
The waking time was 8:23, his body clock soaking up every last opportunity of sleep before catapulting him back to the real world.
The time was an annoyance, an extra hour in bed would be a luxury worth paying dear for, however the worst thing was not seeing the time as a hexadecimal expression of time, but as Black 8, Red 23.

He'd been betting on the 8/11 split, being two steps apart on the wheel was an opportunity to catch one or the other if the ball was hot in that zone. Red 23 was the lucky number. He hadn't recuperated, he was still in roulette mode.

Seemingly drunkenly he abluted and stumbled to the car. Driving was automatic. He could drive with his eyes closed and his hand's tied behind his back.

"Morning" he growled, knowing that he wouldn't be able to hide behind a computer today.

If he'd been checking into his flight with Ryanair, he'd be paying huge excesses for his eyelid luggage, more bags than a footballer's wife. More lines than Ramsey nailing a Cluedo. Put another way, he felt shit, but today was judgement day, December the 4th or 4/12 or Black 4, Red 12.
It was going to be a long, long journey of pain and it was just beginning.

There was no point running away. He was smitten. He had tasted the opium wheel. An extra £1.50 in his bank account. £1.50 more than he had 12 hours ago. That was chicken feed to the £10k he'd had to bet at one point. He nearly spoke out loud, but just about checked himself, visualising the night's events.

£15k sat in the account. Over 15k in fact, but 15k was for a mortgage overpayment that had been saved up through hard work. They weren't rich people and they worked hard. Whatever your ethos on life and spendings, the point was this money was a big deal, a huge deal. More to the point, 7.5k of it wasn't his to gamble.

In slow motion he'd typed in 424 as everything else was autocomplete. At first it was £25 deposits, then times that by four, then add a zero and then some more, he'd made the decision to NOT accept a few K down for the night. What kind of night's adventure was that where you bailed 5k down?
Nope, the mortage money, temporarily sitting in the current account was in the line of fire. Rationality and morals were fired out by ejector seat. Greed and desperation were strapped around the terrorist on board this rollercoaster brain fuck and they were shortly to explode.
In s l o w m o t i o n his deposit was succesful and with 5k on black it span. He hadn't pondered longingly before clicking, fact was this wasn't real money. Couldn't be. Blank it out. Not real. Just need to win this. The ball tickled around as soon as he clicked BET and looked to be heading to black 26, but an evil, evil tiny kick sent it dribbling into the mean, green zero. NO WIN. 5k down the pisser. The plane was nose diving toward the ground, crew had long since surrendered to an inevitable fuck up explosion. Brief flash forward. Row. Saucepans. Smashing plates. The owning up. The overtime. The grind. The penance. The heartache. The shame. Oh the shame. The pathological failings. The total lack of respect. The demons, the demons, oh how they'd laugh at his ineptitude. Oh how they'd laugh so deposit 10k, that's plan B. The balls of zinc now galvanised. Now battle ready for the second nail biter. Never mind nail biting, he could bite his own head off now, he was howling so loud inwardly. How? Why? Such heartache. He was 19/36 away from being a broken man. What can I say? It span. 10k was on black still. It looked to be heading to zero, no not zero, please not 0, please not 21...thank fuck, brakes applied, seriously thank fuck, number 4. There were no adjectives for the elation. Only Anglo Saxon ones possibly. He was shaking so much, he could barely switch off the computer. A tired day at work was mild, mild, mild consequences to what could have been. Before he did switch off the computer, he had a £1.50 bet on EVEN which landed dutifully.

He had got away with it this time. Sometimes you could drive your car, the wrong way, down the M1, blindfold and survive. He was out of control. It was dangerous, more than dangerous, like doing pull ups at the top of a 200 foot crane with no safety net beneath you. The trouble was, he didn't realise that the roulette was malignant. Like a bogeyman in a cupboard, it'd appear when he least expected it, probably not for a while, but it was lurking. He looked at the time, it was only half nine, or 9:30. That's the big hand pointing right down and the little hand pointing at pretty much 90 degrees anti clockwise, to the left. Half nine.
He tidied up the desk, slightly annoyed that his mouse mat was getting frayed at the edges.

That is the best piece of writing about online roulette I have EVER read...

It is totally like that....

Do you mind if I borrow this piece of writing for a help forum I am involved with?

Absolutely, go ahead. Everything broadcast on Channel JG during roulette season is public domain and may be freely copied and used elsewhere.
If you're feeling generous then maybe hint that some lunatic on a fruit machine forum wrote the piece.

Cheers,

In two days time, I will have avoided roulette (hopefully)for precisely one year. Must have had an extra few hundred hours to do other things and financially am about £15k better off. It's a soul destroying game, whether in a bookmakers or online at three in the morning. I blame all those James Bond movies, where everyone is in dinner jackets and always win and waltz off with some beauty and a wad of notes.
Roulette free since December 2011.

Congratulations Harry, make sure you keep on racking up the roulette free years. The game is a pointless waste of life and money.

Everything is pretty much pointless in one way or another.

Playing min stakes its hard to lose much more than any other form of gambling entertainment, other end of the scale it can be be made to be one of the most expensive games to play.

Some like playing this game thats all.
