Newbie Guide / Glossary

Post by admin »

Below is a guide put together to help out you new comers who might not know what on earth we are talking about on the forums!

If you have anything to add, or have spotted an error, please PM me.

A – Alphanumeric Display – The screen that displays credit/plays/bank info. Also used for features in many machines. A good example of this is the ‘Money Belt’ feature, which is present in many fruit machines.

A – AWP (Amusement With Prizes) - The general term used to classify UK fruit machines.

B – Barcode - Basically by getting a THREE BAR symbol, TWO BAR symbol and ONE BAR symbol on the win line, you can obtain hidden features. You then select the feature by pressing a single hold button (1, 2 or 3) for a feature or entering a code (e.g. 132) for a feature. There are also reverse barcodes on some machines, obtained by getting ONE BAR – TWO BAR – THREE BAR on the winline.

B - Backing - You can tell if a machine is backing when you put a pound in. If you hear the pound fall right into the bottom of the machine, it is backing. This means that the "tubes" or the "hopper" is full (this is where the machine pays out from). If a machine is backing it could mean one of two things: 1) The machine is full because it hasnt paid out for ages, in which case you are much more likely to win a lot of money, or 2) The machine has recently been re-filled by an engineer, which means it is full but has recently paid a lot of money out which means it is much less likely that you will win any money.

C - Cancel Button - The cancel button can affect many features on a machine. When you collect a feature (something that would take a lot of skill to do) try holding down the cancel button - this may slow things down. Examples of this are, Shockwave (Impulse), 11th Heaven (Impulse), Searchlight (Great Escape), Skill Nudges, Stopper, Skill Stop, Choose a trail, the list really does go on for ever.

C - CL - on some machines there will be a "Cl" light. This means "cash low", generally the machine has £15 or less in its hopper. Abviously not a good sign!

E – Emptier – A method of playing fruit machines in such a way that it manipulates the payout percentage. These are often caused by bugs in the software, which result the machine not correctly recognising that it has paid out. A lot of emptiers exist in the form of ‘free wins’. A free win is one that when collected, does not register in the payout percentage. This means a player can keep collecting the feature, and eventually empty the machine.

F – Forcing – Playing a fruit machine with the intention of taking the top streak or jackpot. When forcing, no wins are collected when playing for the jackpot. This causes the machine to go under percentage, and become more desperate to pay out. Once a certain amount has been put in, the machine will pay the top prize, through a form of streak, or £25 jackpot.

H - Hold after nudges - When nudging if there is no win available try to bring two identicle fruits onto the winline. When you have finised nudging the machine may give you a message indicating that if you press start, a win will come in - ("Okey Dokey Roll 'Em" - JPM, "Let Em Spin" - Barcrest). If this happens DO NOT HOLD ANYTHING, just press start!

H - Hopper - These replaced the "tubes" many years ago and hold all of the cash the machine has available to pay.

I – Invincibility/ Invincible Mode (IM) – When you cannot lose, and the machine will guarantee you the jackpot or top feature without killing you. There are several forms of IM. The traditional IM was for the logo of the machine to turn red, which still exists on many machines. The alpha display can also say ‘Go All the Way’ or ‘Go For It’, again signifying that you are invincible.
There are also hidden IM’s, with the machine not telling you that you are invincible. The machine may play the same as an IM, but not tell you. Examples of this include constantly landing on +cash squares, quickly taking you to jackpot.

J – JP – Abbreviated term for jackpot.

P – Percentage - By law, each fruit machine has to pay out a certain amount of money. The minimum percentage, by law, in the UK for AWP's is 70% (68% on cross channel ferries). Over a large number of credits (in the tens of thousands) the aim of the machine is to meet this set percentage. The machine can go under and over this amount in the short term, which is known as ‘drifting’.

R - Refil Key - This is a key used by engineers and pub owners to see how much money is in the hopper and payout tubes. Players using these, can see whether the machine has been filled, and is more likely to pay. They are currently universal keys, although companies are introducing unique keys, which only work on one type of machine. A few years ago these keys were quite handy, these days they are less useful.

R - Reset Code - This is a sequence of buttons pressed to download information to an engineers computer. This is of no use to the player, and is a myth that people use to pretend they know something about fruit machines. An old reset code is 3-2-1-2-3-1 (the numbers relate to the hold buttons).

S - Streak - A Streak is when a machine has taken a lot of money, and is below its recommended payout percentage. It must then payout a substantial amount to put the balance right. This can be anything from £40 to £100.

S - SWP - Skill With Prizes, the generic term for quiz machines.

W - Win above or below the winline - If you have three matching symbols above or below the winline and the hold buttons quickly flash, or the reels shake etc., HOLD THEM ALL. The Win will drop down onto the winline.

I'd describe it as a way off trapping a machine into doing something it does'nt forsee.
